HELP - I'm using win98SE 4.10.2222A on a Compaq with 248mb ram an AMD-K6 3D -
56k dialup
I have never used the USB ports until we just bought a Kodak digital camera
and cannot get it to work - It works fine on my lap-top so I know it's OK
It seems that my PC cannot load the needed driver's for the USB ports
I tried removing them and reinstalling to no avail
I get a message saying " The NTKERN.VxD device loader's for this device
could not load the device driver ( code 2 ) "
I went into microsofts web page and tried all I could find there like
resolving it by re-extracting files Uhcd.sys , Usbhub.sys , Usbd.sys ( didn't
know what them mean by re-name them so did not do that)
No matter what I do it seems I alway's get that same " NTKERN " message and
things will not work
Can anyone resolve this ?
I'm on AOL with the same name as my display name so you can email me if it
help's

Open Explorer
Click the + next to C:, then Windows, then System32
Click on the Drivers folder

Do the following files show in the right pane?
hidclass.sys
hidparse.sys
hidvkd.sys
uhcd.sys
usbhub.sys
usbd.sys

If you see the files, rename each file present one at a time.
Left click a file and select Rename in the pop-up window
Right click once in front of the last s in .sys and press the Delete key. The
last s will now be gone.
Press Shift and the -/_ (minus/underscore) key in-between the )/0 and +/= keys.
Press Enter to save the change.

If you do not see the files it is because they are hidden system files. For
them to show you must:
At the top of the screen on the Menu bar click View > Folder Options > View tab.
Under Hidden Files select "Show All Files" and remove the check next to " Hide
file extensions...........".
Click Apply > Ok.
Rename the files mentioned above in the System32\Drivers folder.

Once renamed, extract new ones from the CD using SFC.

I had a similiar problem when I started using USB port. Though the
computer's mother board had provision for USB port, I could never get
it to work. I then got PCI add-on card for USB ports. Works fine for
me.

I don't know if they were there before or not as I didn't check - I had only
been told to check for and rename the UH.sys files with no-one telling me how
to do so or what to rename them - No-one ever mentioned the hid.sys files --
That was in talking to people ( tech's) at Kodak.com - I think I have now
found the proper place to ask tech question's should any more issue's arise
on this old computer of mine ( I'm still going round and round with the
tech's at AOHELL & McAfee trying to get McAfee's "Free" virus protection to
work properly on it - I'm about to delete it all and go buy something else)
Thank you again for all your help

Actually, saying AOHell is putting it mildly. I've never used them, yet I
have seen the doodoo let loose on others I know.

Dump McAfee if it won't work and more than enough time was spent in attempting
to resolve the issue. IMO that's a bottom of the barrel product as well.

If you haven't already, try either Avast (free for 1 year)
http://www.avast.com/i_idt_1016.html Home Edition

or AVG ( free for ?? )
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php .

Toss Zone Alarms free firewall app in the mix
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=staticcomp_za

along with a few other spyware/adware apps and you're on the path to good
protection.

Cool Web Shredder:
http://www.intermute.com/products/cwshredder.html

Ad-Aware SE:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
After installing Ad-Aware, open it and click on the ref update to get the latest
up-to-date ref file, then run Ad-Aware and delete everything it finds.

Spybot - Search & Destroy:
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
Run it at it's default settings until you learn an know more about it. Spybot
S&D is more of an advanced users tool and changing from the default settings can
be dangerous to the novice user. Items found in the default settings that are
RED can usually be safely removed. If you are unsure of a found item, do not
remove it and ask for help.

HijackThis:
http://www.richardthelionhearted.com/~merijn/downloads.html
http://majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

Copy HJT to it's own folder, this is where the log files will be saved.
Read the quick start here on how to create a log file that can be copied/pasted
into a forum that can provide assistance on removal of unwanted pests.
http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/#quick

Then post the logs to an appropriate forum where they specialize in
spyware/hijacker removal. Please read any sticky notes for proper posting which
are most commonly posted first at the top in each specific forum. Read any
information under each forum category name for information on what that
particular one is used for, look for the proper one that you post logs to.

It’s also a good idea to have a HOSTS file to block bad sites, scroll to HOSTS
File Manager here:

SpywareBlaster - stops the badboys before they even get a chance to install:
