USB error: please insert a disk into removable disk E

I have had my USB for four months and it was working fine on all computers I used it with. All of a sudden one morning when I went to grab something off it, it showed the "please insert a disk into removable disk E"
It didnt get damaged in any way, it just quit working. I have tried restarting my computer and trying my usb on other computers but the same message appears.

I have a lot of documents on this device, mainly word and excel, I just want to recover them if possible.

Also, when I try running it through Recuva, it says that they are "unable to open drive".

It seems to be able to fix that kind of issues without too much of a hassle. If it doesn't prove useful, you could always try some of the other data recovery option listed in this thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html
