USB Ethernet Adapter Speed Issues.

I am having an issue with a New USB 3.0 Anker Ethernet adapter I bought. My current onboard ethernet card is only capable of handling up to 100mbps. I have 300mbps internet in my home and get 300mbps from my MAC Computer.

My Windows 10 PC (Acer Z1-621) gets about 90mbops when hardwired directly to the onboard card, when I install the Gigabit USB Ethernet adapter it recognizes that it is 1Gigabit capable but when I run speedtest.net or Spectrum Speedtest I actually only get about 30mbps. 1/3 of what I get with the onboard card.

What would cause this? and how can I fix it?

I am running Cat6 20ft cable in the same room as router/modem.

Always worthwhile to try another known working (at speed) Ethernet cable. The existing cable may have a bad spot or more likely a faulty plug termination.

Or try another wired pc using the same Cat6 cable and router port. Determine if the speed loss stays there or follows the Windows 10 PC.

Does your router happen to have a USB flash drive or other USB drive installed? If so, remove and see if speed improves. (Had that problem....)

Are you sure that you disabled the onboard card? And any wireless capabilities also. Only one network adapter should be enabled.

Take a close look at the Anker's configuration:

Make sure that you have configured the Anker to match the router. Make the configurations manually if "auto". Or if already "manual" try "auto".

Speed and duplex are often overlooked.

If you do not have IPv6 service - disable that on the card.

I was surprised to hear about a machine that only has 100m port but it seems it closer to a tablet than a computer.

The USB2 ports on your machine may limit you even if you get it working. The maximum speed on usb2 is 480mbps but that is half duplex and there is other overhead. You likely will never get the 300mbps. I forget the number people used to get almost all machines have usb3 and faster ports,,,,just like most have gigabit ethernet

I have tried connecting the same Cat6 cable to the MAC I have right next to my Windows 10 pc and was able to get 300mbps speed. So I know its not the cable.

Also the cable gets me close to 100 direct wired through the PCIe port, but only 20 through the USB. Im thinking it is an issue with the USB port speed but don't know how to see what it runs.

Are you able to see the USB adapter (the Anker) via Device Manager > Network Adapters?

And get into the properties window and tabs?

Yes I can see it and get into all of the properties tabs. Speed and Duplex shows the option for "1.0 Gbps Full Duplex" mode.

I see 3 "Generic USB Hub"

Right click and check the Properties via the various tabs.

However, with respect to being "generic" you may be at max now.

My cynical view is that "generic" just means that something might fit - actually working as required may well be another matter....
