I got a new computer and I loved it, but one thing was really annoying. All the USBs keep disconnecting and reconnecting. I have scoured the internet for answers and all I could find was that there were settings in my computer that made them disconnect after inactivity. It's not that though because my USBs disconnect at random times when I'm using the computer. It mostly happens though when I am downloading a lot of stuff and uploading stuff. I think its something to do with my wifi connector but I'm not sure. If you have an answer please respond.

Solution
can be a few things..one could be a bios issue make sure the mb has the newest bios file. make sure the mb has newest intel or amd chipset drivers installed and if there a 3 party usb chipset make sure the newest drivers are installed. the last issue can be to many devices plugged into the usb ports and pulling more power then the onboard usb chipset can output. may waant to try a powered usb hub.

Hi there Maddox Williams,

I would totally agree with smorizio and say that you need to make sure that all USB drivers are up to date. I doubt that the system can't provide enough power. Though, it will not hurt to try this option too.
If these two things doesn't help though, it may be good idea to contact the MOBO's manufacturer Support as there may be something wrong with it.

I have a similar problem on my Asus Z97-A motherboard, but I have been able to narrow down the problem. Read on for something interesting...

1) For me, the problem is only with SOME USB 3.0 devices like Card readers and external harddrives (some multidtrive USB 3.0 readers do work, some HDs are temperamental about when they will work) - this is all very weird.
2) But the most weird thing is that the problem only occurs when I join my windows 8.1 pro pc to a domain, as soon as I take it off the domain, the problem goes away - this seems to imply that the domain group policies have something to do with it. But why then do some drives work on and off?

I tried the power options as described in the post (http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2335635/usb-drives-disconnected-reconnected-usb-work-great-usb.html)
and I have tried disabling XHCI as described in the post (http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1885037/windows-usb-devices-disconnect-reconnect-power-saving.html)

None of the above worked.

Hello dear users,

I had the same issues with my USB midi controllers. They were connecting and disconnecting constantly which drove me crazy.
After trying everything written above (they may be a solution for someone else's specific problem) I finally realised the problem was my desktop pc's usb ports have been used by MANY devices - old, new, current.

Let me explain this: each time we connect a device into a usb port it installs a driver (mostly automatic). Then it stays in the system. Even if we plug in a friend's usb flash disk to copy a document, its drivers linger on. So over time our machine collects many UNUSED usb port drivers. By cleaning them we avoid possible conflicts and a system speed up as an added bonus.

Here's how I did it...

I downloaded a little freeware USB port utility called USBDeview from www.nirsoft.net and ran it AS ADMINISTRATOR.
I found the unused old drivers and uninstalled them thus cleaning the list. Then restart. Plug in your device, see it is activated and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Have a nice day.
