I have an HP TouchSmart 520 with Windows 7 and a Redragon M601 usb gaming mouse. The mouse was working fine for a while, and it currently works in safe mode. Everything else (keyboards and other mice) works on this computer and the Redragon mouse also works on a different computer. Suddenly one day it just stopped and I've tried everything I could within my little knowledge of drivers. Reinstalling the drivers, etc. The computer detects the mouse and it says it installed successfully but it won't actually move. Super appreciate any suggestions.

I recently did a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit, and did not have to install any drivers for keyboard or mouse. When I look at the Properties, then Driver for my mouse, it says the Provider is Microsoft, the date is 6/21/06, and then it gives the driver version. Granted, my mouse is just a generic Inland Brand mouse, and not a gaming mouse, but what I suggested above about uninstalling the mouse drivers and re-booting should have gotten the basic functions of the mouse working.

I wouldn't think the other computer being Windows 8 vs. Windows 7 should make a difference as far as Windows finding and installing basic drivers.
Does the mouse devoid of any drivers operate on your system? If not then have you tried ruling out a dead mouse by plugging it into another known system/laptop and without any drivers, operates? I'd be inclined to ask you to make sure that your chipset and USB drivers are up to date. On that note, I'd also ask you to make sure your system's motherboard BIOS is up to date.

In all honesty, it's not unusual to have a cheap mouse break down in the middle of doing nothing. I've had a couple of mice that cost just a little more than 10USD that just refused to cooperate with me. I've had one where it just caused a BSOD no matter how careful I was with the drivers.

If the mouse works in safe mode and with a different computer, that would seem to rule out hardware issues. Plug another mouse in with the non-working mouse also plugged in, then uninstall the driver for the non-working mouse. Re-boot the computer and unplug the working mouse. Windows should find and install a generic driver for the mouse. See if that works.

Where did you get the driver that you re-installed? From a CD-ROM that came with the mouse? From the manufacturer's website?

I did what you suggested but nothing happened. I installed a driver from the manufacturer's website but that rendered anything device on the computer useless for some reason. I had to restore the computer to before I downloaded the driver. So yes the mouse is still definitely in working condition and it is an issue with the drivers.

In safe mode, Windows only loads up the basic drivers needed for operation. Since your mouse works in safe mode but not in normal mode, it could be that some application not loaded during safe mode startup may be causing a conflict with your mouse's driver. Have you installed any new programs recently?

Have you tried the mouse on a different USB port? Are you using a USB hub?

Yes def try an older version of the driver. Like mjslakeridge said also try plugging the mouse into a different USB port because your mouse might be plugged into a faulty one.

I've only installed 2 or 3 things since around the time the mouse stopped working, which was probably a little less than 2 months ago. I've uninstalled a couple of things but I'm somewhat confident these aren't the problem. I have tried the mouse on every USB port. Also I don't know what a USB hub is lol

A USB hub is just a device that lets you plug multiple USB devices into a single USB port on a computer, in the event you have more USB devices than available ports.

When you tried the mouse on a different computer, did you install drivers, or just let Windows find the mouse and install it's own generic drivers?

All I did was plug it into the computer as usual and it worked right away. Didn't install anything. The other computer was a newer HP Touchsmart with Windows 8 by the way.
