Usb overload

Hello, I have a new HP Laser single function printer (USB) and an HP flat bed scanner (USB) on 7 yrs. old IBM desktop. HP tells me there is not enough USB power to drive both. Scanner dies when printer is connected, works when printer is not connected. Any thoughts?
