I need more power to my usb port in my computer. I have magic jack and I switched computers- transferred my magic jack to a different computer. The computer I currently have is a newer computer and I cannot get caller ID because the usb doesn't have enough power. Oddly, the old, really old, computer's usb worked fine and I had caller ID. My question is where is the source for the usb power? If I get a new and better psu would it make a difference to my usb port? Or is it the mb, or usb port itself?

I have a hub now- temporarily til I figure this out. I don't like the hub- too many wires. Besides- everytime I use another port in the hub my magic jack shuts down- very touchy and sensitive or something. I cannot believe that my computer would not have at least 2.0 in it. I've tried every port. So are you telling me that the power is determined by the numbers i.e. 1.0 2.0 3.0 - whichever I have? I just want to replace the computer part that will give the usb enough power

btw, i had to get a hub with a power adapter- the ones that just connect to the computers usb wasn't enough power either

Hi -
A new PSU won't help, the voltage and amperage will be regulated and managed by the MOBO.

The standard USB spec is 5V at 100 mA; the port may provide up to 500 mA after the device connects and negotiates for more power. (Someone - stop me if I've said this incorrectly.) USB 3.0 has, I think, a potentially higher amperage spec, but I'm not 100% certain. (A quck trip to wikipedia would answer this.)

You can also look for a cable with two USB A ports in a Y configuration so that your device can draw power from two USB ports instead of from one. Lots of external USB hard drives use this type of cable. I don't know if this is exactly what you need, but the cable would be something like this one at Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-3-Feet-Cable-External-Drive/dp/B0047AALS0/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1397075281&sr=8-8&keywords=usb+y+cable

Or go to amazon and search on "USB Y Cable"

Hope this helps.

that would be worth trying- the y cable. I would need to males to plug into the computer, and a female to plug the magic jack into. I wonder if there is such?

ok, just bought the y cable on ebay, $2.99 free shipping. (I really don't know how they make any money). Thanks for telling me this froggy!

You are most welcome! Happy I was able to help! Hope it works for you!
