USB printer driver

OK, the group policy isn't stopping it. Time to look around some more.

See if the computer can recognize new hardware...

Start>Run>Services.msc>OK.

Look for "Shell Hardware Detection" and see if it is running (double-click to see properties).

"Startup type" should be set to "Automatic"

If it is not set to Automatic, change it now. If set ok but is not running, click "Start"

thanks - i cant get hold of her tonight, she's probably out for haloween (student bar i expect) but i have emailed this to he,r and she has a link to the page as you suggested

2 things left.

#1: That's not the correct driver
#2: Malware

I'm stuck on #2 because you couldn't install an Hp printer either. I am still curious if this is only affecting printers or any new hardware that needs a driver.

thanks tigsounds - the driver should be correct, we downloaded cannons latest driver and they did a remote access.
Malware - i don't know much about this, the scanner part of the printer/scanner works ok. I will see what i can detect and remove, but i'm guessing its going to be 'format c:' and start again.
i'll let you know how it goes

On malware...

aford10 wrote up a good article on removing malware. It is something you'll probably need the computer in front of you to do as it involves many steps and a few downloads. It is one of the "stickies" at the top of this forum. (or
HERE)

thanks for the link tigsounds - we have done those scans. Malwarebytes found one problem, combofix gave us a big page of gobbledegook, and ccleaner found stuff that our previous registery clean should have found (tune up utilities).
Now to wait till sunday evening back at uni...

sorry its taken so long to get back to you - no luck after the malware scans!! I have left my daughter with instructions to contact Asus, as both asus laptops cant install the printer maybe they can help. It may be a while as she is concentrating on a project at the moment.
In the meantime i'm going to try an epson printer - not a combined printer/scanner. The HP printer i tried before was a combined printer/scanner, maybe thats the problem...
Thank you all for your help so far - i will update later whether i fix it or not.
Pat

well, epson didn't install either - we get the same port errors that the cannon gave when trying to manually install it. Epson installation says 'the specified port is unknown' and when we go into printer properties there are no available ports to be able to add.

I tried to download your BIOS setup instructions but Asus has many different computers starting with X50RL and the manuals they do allow to be downloaded don't show the BIOS settings.

My suspicions include a BIOS setting for giving an interrupt to the USB system. Since yours printers might be "bi-directional printing", (can talk back to the computer), it may need an interrupt to alert that the paper is out, jammed, printing progress, ink low/out, or any other error messages. The driver/application may not be able to start without an available interrupt for the USB System. (Bi-directional printing does not mean the print head on a dot-matrix printer will print in both directions)

If you can enter the BIOS at initial power-on, look through the BIOS settings screens an look for ones pertaining to USB and set them to Yes, or Auto as they may be found. Do not leave any USB settings on "Disabled." Save and exit, restarting the computer and see what happens (if you were able to find USB settings).

Try, try again.

Edit: If you know a real Geek, (I use the word only as a generic term for anybody that really understands computers), Then download a specialty USB tool to analyze your USB ports HERE and have them test your USB connections and devices.

thanks tigsounds - we'll give it a go. who would have thought that printing would be so dificult!
i do know some computer geeks, but i still ended up here for help 😉

This place is great except for the distance and no hands-on immediate help. Here, we get to stop and think about it and ponder other options and possibilities. It's kind of like being on another planet and telling someone how to grow their own food over the radio.

I'll anticipate failure and save the time for you to get back here and for me or anyone else to respond.

Some Services can disable printing or several other things you might not have needed yet. The following services must be running so should be set to Automatic.

Plug and Play
Print Spooler
Remote Procedure Call(RPC)
Remote Procedure Call(RPC) Locator
Shell Hardware Detection
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Windows User Mode Driver Framework
Windows Management Instrumentation
Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensioins

To check on their status and change if needed, click Start>Run, and enter Services.msc then click OK.
Maximize the screen, you'll need it full size. The list is alphabetical. Double-click on the items I listed to see them. There is a drop-down box to change them from Disabled, manual, to Automatic or whatever. You can try to start a stopped Service by clicking the Start button there after it is enabled as Automatic or manual.

There is a bug in that system of yours and it just has to be found.

Event Viewer might have something to show by now. Take a look in the Application and System sections.
To see the Event Viewer: Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer.

sorry about the delay reporting back - she has an asignment due in, taking up her time...
anyway, a few of the services listed above were set to off, but switching them on hasn't helped. I forgot to check the event viewer though!
She wants to do a 'windows repair' - would that undo all that weve changed so far?
also, i didn' t look at usb ports in BIOS - thats something i don't want to rush at...
i have reminded her to contact Asus to see if they know.
thanks again, Pat

A Repair will not loose her files. It may fix the problem.

What repair will loose is all updates since the original install, including service packs, .NET Framework, and Direct-X 9c.

All device drivers remain. Some programs like ATI Catalyst Control Center will not function again until .NET Framework 2.0 or above is re-installed.

A "Repair Install" is a bit confusing to the Un-initiated. When the CD is booted, it leads one to think repairs are done through the repair console. Not so. Pressing "R" when it first shows up to repair is pre-mature. Repair is done by making choices that seem to be doing a new install, but "Setup" will discover the system already in place and make a last offer to repair it. This is the choice to make when it is desired to do a "Repair Install."

When "Setup" does a repair, it will appear to be reinstalling Windows completely. Don't panic, that's just what it looks like. Just read everything carefully so a true "New" install isn't chosen.

If she gets to the point that Setup wants to know if she wants to leave the current file system intact, or to format, THEN panic and press the F3 key or hold the power button down for 5 seconds to get out of there and re-start, and try again..

just a short update - she is home for the weekend but left the XP disc at uni, so no repair this weekend! i wanted to let you know that we have not disapeared after all your help,it will be another week

no news - she wouldn't let me do a windows repair! With only 2 weeks till the end of term she didn't want to risk me breaking it. i will update when i have more to report

well, its fixed - hooray. i had a school IT guy have a look - apparantly she had a corrupt segment on the hard drive. He repaired this and now the printer works. As i understand it, the corrupt segment had the data needed for the printer ports.

thank you all for all your help

p.s. we contacted Asus - they said it may be a compatability issue, do a full recovery:- not quite as helpful as Cannon!

EDIT: Yey..Problem Solve, I do a Disk Defrag.. n' whalaa Fixed.. 😀

have a same Problem..on my HP Desktop PC with my Printer HP Laserjet 1022 🙁, n I dont know how to fix it...
