USB Printing support?

I have an end user who has a docked laptop computer. He is connected via USB
to an HP printer. Although it prints documents, other things like the
built-in software for picture editing and the scan functions bring error
messages. After going to the properties of the printer and looking at the
ports, the on checked is DOT something.
Why is there no USB option as on other laptops here. I could add a port, but
not sure about the configuration.

My question......in the property pages of the printer\ under the ports tab,
there are COM1, COM2, LPT1, etc. But no USB option.

The DOT port is normal. This seems to indicate that the device is for
printing. As for the rest, I would check for software update to see if the
other software would work.

Having wrassled with HP devices on my own (XP) machine, the
first question that comes to mind is, did your end user
install the HP software BEFORE he attached the HP device to
his system?

If he didn't, he's got to start all over again.

Honestly, I think that is the problem. I am fairly new here and the IT guy
before me installed it, I don't think it was done correctly. It would be an
easy fix I guess to uninstall it and add it back. The reason I posted because
it seems to me that I have seen somewhere to add USB printing support, and I
was curious to why there was no USB option in the properties\ports tab.

There are two items that will mess up my HP psc. a) install the device
before the
software. b) If java is on the PC before the software install.
