USB Storage Device Problem

Hi all,

I have a 500MB USB storage device that I have previously used with ease. At the moment, it will not appear in either "My Computer" or "Computer Management".

However, the "Safely Remove Hardware" tab appears with the following details:

- USB Mass Storage Device
- USB DISK 2.0 USB Device
- Generic volume

Not only does it appear there, it also appears within "Device Manager". I was hoping that someone could explain a method to fix the problems I am having.

I am using Windows XP with Service Pack 3 on an Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2200 @ 2.20Ghz with 2GB of RAM.

EDIT – I've been looking through the "Safely Remove Hardware" tab and it says the device's location is "Location 0 (USB DISK 2.0)" I'm not sure if that is important or not.

use a partition manager and see if its hidden or unformatted

go in computer management under storage you should see disk management
you might be able to format it from there, if you cant then use a partition manager

partition magic, paragon partition manager etc.

Thanks for your advice. Is their a partition manager that I can use that is free? The data on the USB is not worth paying for, but I'd still like to have it.

Here's something that's helped me:
USB mapped to location (0) fix

- Right click "My Computer"
- Go to "Manage"
- Expand the folder marked "Storage" (click the + sign next to it)
- Single click "Disk Management"
Here you will/should see your device even if it is mapped to location (0)
and you can see the actual location it it exists (like E:\) and you
can type this as the address on the file manager

If this doesn't work, you should check out also "Control Panel" ->
"Computer Management" -> "Disk Management"

There you should see the device and the location it wants to be in (like E:\).
If you have already mapped a network drive to that location (E:\), you
cannot access the USB device. So you must disconnect the network
drive. Then type this location E: as the address on the file manager.
