I'm having trouble with slow USB transfer rates.

Need more info. What size file are you transferring? Are you transferring from hdd to usb or vice-versa?

USB transfers in pulses with max rate of 480Mbps. That does not mean it will always transfer at this rate. It is like sine wave with peak at 480Mbps.
