on ebay there are adapter modules that allow you to use your old laptop memory on a desktop PC. ok fine, BUT WHY NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND?

i do computer repair, and sometimes im donated orphan laptops completely stripped of hard drives and memory. i have loads of Desktop memory lying around, but no Laptop memory. Laptop memory is extremely rare and expensive. it would be nice to have a converter to at least test the laptops to see if they work or not without wasting money on expensive Laptop memory.

Hirens Boot CD takes care of no hard drive, and a universal Adapter takes care of no battery, but the computer wont even start up without any Ram.

i realize the Desktop Ram might not physically fit inside the laptop case, but it would be to test the laptop to see if it works, run some tests with Hirens Boot cd, maybe DBAN a hard drive for the client. then after testing it, i would know whether or not to invest in expensive laptop memory, OR just list it on ebay as "Tested, Working, no Ram", $50.

or when i get a laptop with a cracked screen, i could convert it into a Desktop PC by simply outputting the video to the VGA, or HDMI ports. no point in just throwing it out if the motherboard is fully functional. and by building a laptop motherboard in an open air case, you dont need large fans to cool it like older PC's because most laptops generally have copper heat pipes instead of fans.

There are no 'Desktop RAM to laptop RAM slot adapter/conversion' things, because there is no market for it.

Laptop RAM inside of a Desktop..OK. That you could actually 'sell'.

"Tested, Working, no Ram"
That is when you use some of your stable of laptop RAM sticks to test.

this is sort of what im talking about. they make converters to use SD cards in MicroSD devices, the same principle should apply to computer RAM. they could have a ribbon cable attached to a board with a ram slot.

And they would sell exactly 2.
You and one other guy.

It could only really be used for testing purposes.
But for just testing, why not just use some RAM from your pile of laptop RAM sticks sitting around?

i guess, but i don't have any laptop RAM. only piles of Desktop RAM. in the extremely rare case i actually get a laptop with the RAM still inside, its always a fully working one in pristine condition, probably from the father of a spoiled rich teenager who only used it to check her facebook page. those ones i format and resell without even touching a screwdriver. most people pull the ram out before they get rid of it. im assuming they sell the ram sticks on ebay. i could probably afford a few 128, or 256mb sticks, although it would kill me to pay the prices they are going for. and even then the computer would slow to a crawl and be pretty much useless.

as for mass market appeal, see the above picture, these things are usually made in china, cost pennies to produce, and there are chinese ebayers willing to dropship any product no matter how silly or ridiculous. if infomercials can sell a blanket with arms sewn in, im sure a ram converter could sell.

If there was a market for 'desktop RAM sticks in a laptop'....there would be some conversion thing to buy. Since there isn't....

you can use a broken laptop as a Desktop, and all it takes is 2 Acrylic sheets. in a case like this, it would be helpful be able to upgrade to any Desktop RAM you wanted. testing is just the initial use for it. and there are hundreds of posts, blogs, youtube videos, doing this mod. and similar computer mods.

i cant see any practical use for a Laptop to Desktop RAM converter, who would have laptop memory just lying around?. but for whatever reason they sell them. thats all im saying.
