Use spare parts (Athlon X2) to test htpc waters?

I have my dad's old machine that has a busted PSU that, at the time, I just decided to replace the whole machine instead of fixing an old machine. However, this might serve as a very entry-level HTPC. $30 or so would get me a new PSU and that might be a cheap way to test the waters.

The question now is, are these parts too old to give me a decent idea of whether I would like an HTPC?

Processor - AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+
Mobo - Foxconn A7GM-S (ATI Radeon™ HD 3200 graphics engine, HDMI out, 7.1 audio, Blu-ray support, Micro ATX)
RAM - 4 GB DDR2 ??? (800 maybe?)

For now, I'd just get a new PSU and leave everything else the same. If I like what I am seeing I can always upgrade the case or other parts as I want.

I figure I could install OpenELEC/XBMC and give it a go and see what happens? Unless you guys can tell right now that it won't be worth my time? At the very least it should get me ESPN, right?
