Okay so I'd guess the obvious thing is that the i7 would outperform the FX by a mile, but is it worth getting a used CPU or a brand new FX 6300 and OCing it to 5Ghz? Thanks!

Op was talking about the MSI 970 mobo, not gpu.

If you are going to shop eBay, you need to be quite selective and savvy. I picked up a i7 3770k for $50 (usually $150ish), a fractal design r5 window for $20, 16Gb Patriot 1866 for $20, 128Gb Samsung 840 Pro for $20 and a nzxt Kraken x61 for $60. What I didn't do was shop mainstream. If you search for i7 you get thousands of hits, same with 3770k. The person who listed my cpu didn't list it as an i7-3770k but as an intel 3700k, so it didn't show up under the mainstream searches. The r5 was a scratch-n-dent, had a small crease in 1 panel, no biggie to fix, but was listed as (new-other) not new or used and as a fractal case with dent. Try not to buy from computer or electronic stores, they...
The i7 will be considerably faster. I would not advise buying an FX-6xxx chip today.

What's your use-case and budget? Depending on your budget and what you're using it for, you're probably best choosing between a new Intel system vs an old Intel system.

Well this is where I screwed up a little - I already bought the 6300 last week, and it's held up very well in terms of gaming so far. I mean, I've managed GTA5 at 1440p on a playable 40-45fps at high on an R9 380 4GB.

The issue is, I've got £150 for upgrades. Originally I was going to buy the MSI 970 Gaming Motherboard and a new case, with a mouse and keyboard. I could probably squeeze that for just over £150, maybe £160, because my current motherboard is so outdated and can barely handle any overclocking.

Now I'm thinking, I'd be better off reselling my 6300 (selling for around £50-70 on eBay), and buying an Intel CPU with an Intel motherboard; I have just seen the horrid price of the LGA2011 socket motherboards though so I've been put off the i7 and I'm thinking of an older Intel Core i5. The Intel Core i5 2500k is around £90 on eBay and I could easily get a motherboard for £40-£50. Plus the £50-£70 I'd get for selling my FX, would take my budget to around £200.

What do you suggest based on that?

Try not to buy from computer or electronic stores, they generally have a clue what merchandise they are selling and it's approximate worth, instead look for best offers from the little mom and pop eBay stores who sell baby clothes etc. They are usually more interested in turnover for mass profit, not individual profits, so you can low-ball offers. A grandma selling baby clothes usually couldn't tell the difference in an i5-3570K and an i7-3770k, they are just computer parts.

An i7 3770K for $50?! Daaamn! That's crazy good. Here in the UK the cheapest I seem to be able to find on eBay, as used, is about £150.
