Hi im going to change mother board and cpu from fm2 mother board and amd athlon x4 to g1 sniper and i7 4k 1150 cpu, i know i have to really format and do reinstall of os because of the big hardware change, but i was wondering could i buy a brand new hhd and boot windows onto that but use my old hhd with all my saved games and data on as my seccond hhd in sata 2 port, ill put the new hhd in sata 1 port. then once ive got windows running on the new hhd go into the seccond hhd my old one and uninstall windows 8 of that. so really both hhd's would hve windows 8 on but does the pc boot from the hhd which is in sata 1 port. i thaught this would save alot of re down loading. is this possible, thankyou for reading.

Solution

Yes, that will work.
You're basically building most of a new PC. New motherboard/CPU/HDD/OS.

Take out everything
Install all the new parts, incl the new HDD
Install the OS...
You can certainly use the old HDD, but not in the way you're thinking.

And applications and games that live on it must be reinstalled.
Ideally, what you should do is:

Disconnect old HDD
Install new HDD
Install Windows and get it running
Verify that ONLY the new HDD is in the boot order
Connect the old HDD
Copy whatever data you need off it. (Data, not applications)
Format that whole drive, including the original boot partition.
Install applications and games where you choose...new drive or old drive.

On new HDD you have to install Windows 8 for the first time. With UEFI BIOS it really does not matter much which drive is in which SATA port as you can change the boot order priority. Don't attach the old hdd when installing windows 8 on new hdd. Once you set up Windows 8 on new hdd, attach old one. You really can't uninstall windows 8 from that hdd. Your only option would be to format the C drive (It may change to D in case both hdds are installed) of the old hdd.

If this is not the answer then forgive my poor comprehension of your question pl.

Both make perfect sense thankyou, i just was hoping i didn't have to reinstall all games, i think ill just format my old hhd and reinstall windows 8 onto that from disc, and use the new one as seccond hhd, can i install new second hhd before i format and reinstall win on my old one, or have i to boot from disc delete partitions then format and install win 8 then power down and install second new hhd,

Depending on what the drives are and how old, it is probably better to use the new drive for the new OS, etc.

You'll be better off if you opt to install Windows 8 on new HDD. Use old HDD for data storage only. While installing the Windows, you can format any drive that you want. No issue there.

It wold be better however to remove the old HDD. Plug in the new HDD. Install Windows 8 on it and once you are done. Plug in the old HDD.

Now you can format any drive or even delete the partitions of old drive using Windows 8 on new HDD.

So sorry if i sound a bit thick but i am a noob, so i change my motherboard cpu en psu and at the same remove oid hdd en replace with new one, insert win 8 disc boot install from that, once up and running with drivers plug in old hdd and format that one from actually in windows which is on new hdd, please tell me ive got it this time, en sorry to be a noob,

Yes. You have correctly picked it up this time. No issue and stop saying sorry or noob. It is ok to ask to clarify the things. Glad to assist. :)
