Uses of 1x, 3G, LTE

Hello, I have Ntelos Wireless (regional carrier who uses sprint's wireless bands and provides wholesale roaming to sprint in WV/VA) and was wondering, when I make a call when on 3G, does it fall back to the 1x network (texts as well?), or does it just use the 3G network. And when LTE comes this year, will calls and texts go through it?

You are talking about data connection, not calling or text, those are not on the same network.
