My motherboard have 4 RAM slot with the maximum ram capacity of 16 GB (DDR3).

I am planing to buy an extra 4 GB of RAM however this leave me with one more empty slot, will this slow down my performance/ ram speed by any chance?

Solution
If you have two RAM modules now, they will most likely be running in Dual Channel.

Adding a 3rd module will cause the RAM to run Single Channel slowing them down.

Ideally you should run 2 or 4 RAM modules in order to have them operate in Dual Channel mode and in that way get the maximum performance from your RAM.
