If you have two RAM modules now, they will most likely be running in Dual Channel.
Adding a 3rd module will cause the RAM to run Single Channel slowing them down.
Ideally you should run 2 or 4 RAM modules in order to have them operate in Dual Channel mode and in that way get the maximum performance from your RAM.

Depends what motherboard do you have? The 2 dimms you have at the moment are they a matched pair and have you got them in the correct slots to run dual channel?
