So I wish to set up a TV as my second monitor and I was wondering is it would be possible to do this with a MINI DP to HDMI lead.

I am also using a GTX 970

Solution
GL2450HM should have HDMI and DVI
Your GTX970 still has 1 DVI and 3 mini displayport, too bad the mini HDMI is broken.
The TV has only HDMI and VGA.
hmmm....Yup, mini DP to HDMI adapter is the only solution for the TV, unfortunately.
GTX970 support up to 4 displays.
What outputs you have depends on the GTX970 model some have 1 DVI, 1DP, and 2 HDMIs...some have different.

You do not really need DP to HDMI adapter, just arrange the GPU outputs to fit a TV and a monitor.
TV s are susually only compatible with HDMI, but some can accept DVI or even DP.
Monitors support usually HDMI, DVI, VGA and sometimes DP.

If you need support from us, post your GTX970 full model description, your TV model and your monitor model.

My GTX 970 has 3 Mini Display ports, 1 DVI and 1 MINI HDMI (The MINI HDMI port is broken)
Monitor is a BenQ GL2450HM
TV is a Alba 19 Inch (Sorry don't know full model description)

I am currently using a DVi to HDMI lead to connect to the monitor

I am just having trouble with setting up the second screen. It just won't link up and windows won't recognise it

Everything is working fine I think it has something to do with the Mini DP to HDMI cable
