Using EVGA G2 750w psu eco mode.

Hi.

I have the evga g2 750w psu, and the fan is possibly the loudest part of my rig (although not all that loud, still irritating if you have precise hearing).

It has an eco mode switch which turns the fan off and turns it back on automatically when under load or high temps. Is it safe to use ecomode continously? My pc's on around 12 hours a day, mostly idle, but when not, I'm playing games or programming.

Then it'll only be running the pc when your using it? And only under load?

If you turn the eco mode off, it runs the fans continuously. It doesn't keep the fan off.

Sorry I just realised my original post was worded terribly. I want to turn eco mode on and leave it turned on for as long as I use this pc. So in that case the fans are only used when needed. Is that safe? It'll sure give the fan more life span, but what about the components inside the psu?

Yes - that's safe. That's what they were designed to do. The fan will turn on when the power supply load increases.

The main reason for the ECO mode is noise prevention during idling.

There are some Corsair power supply that have fans that don't come on until the PSU hits a certain temperature or load but they don't have a physical button, so there is not much to worry about except ambient temperature, physical location, airflow and seasonal usage.

What temperature is your thermostat set to during the summer? and what is the temperature around the tower? and is the tower backed up as a wall, desk or something?

If it is in hibernating mode when it is idle then the ECO mode will definitely be a good idea. It mainly comes down to the fact if the fan noise bothers and you do use the computer more during fall, winter and spring then it might be a good idea to put it on eco mode during the summer if the AC is cranking and the tower has excellent airflow and no physical obstructions.

I only have my PSU that have fans that running all the time since my ambient temperature is around 92º F or 33º C.

My thermostat is set to around 20C in Summer (our Summer in Scotland is as warm as an average winter...), but the heating is generally off in my room with windows open (I like the cold). I probably have an ambient temp of around 22C. My tower is on my desk, next to a window, with a good 15 inches from the wall from the right side panel. and 4 inches or so from the back. It's in no way cramped as far as I can tell, no physical obstructions.


It's a fractal design define r4 case, so it's designed with sound dampening in mind, and not cooling. Having said that, I'd say my cooling is still adequate; 2 stock front intakes running at 5v at idle, 7v when gaming (very rarely 12v as its way too loud). Bottom intake be quiet 120mm fan, and rear exhaust be quiet 140mm fan. A be quiet dark rock pro 3 air cooler. The latter 3 are all PWM, whilst the stock fans are connected to a fan controller.

Do you think it's fine to just leave it on ECO mode for as long as I use my pc? I have a 10 year warranty should anything go wrong, although not 100% sure overheating issues are covered.

It should be fine. Just wanted to make sure that the tower wasn't cramped somewhere. Since rest of the fans are quiet enough, you could try installing the power supply with the fan facing up so that there is still air going through it. All of my power supplies are installed with the fan facing up since my psu filter are too bulky or not included with the case.

I have a pretty decent filter, so is it still worth swapping it? I don't think it'll impact noise levels much.

The filter is fine. I am just saying that flipping the PSU over might be worthwhile since you are worried about the lack of airflow through the power supply when it is on idle.
