Using laptop screen with one external monitor as a dual monitor setup for gaming?

Hello all,

I haven't had any experience with dual monitors for gaming before, so what I am asking might not even be possible. I did some search but all what I found was about 2 or more external monitors, and nothing about the laptop monitor itself as part of the dual setup (again, for gaming).

I have a laptop with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760m running Windows 8.1 64-bit.
I hooked up an old external monitor via VGA, Belinea 22W Artistline (old, about to bite the dust!).

My question is: is it possible to set up my laptop screen with the external monitor to act as dual setup for gaming? If yes, how?

My question isn't about whether the performance would be good or bad. I would love to try it out and see for myself. But it's about how I can approach it.

I really appreciate your answers.

Thanks!

If your laptop has optimus, then nope.

But, you wouldn't want to anyways. You can't game on both at the same time, the difference in screen size is simply too much. Now if you wanted to use one display for say a map only then the other for the 3d game itself, sure that works. But you need games that support that function.

And how would I do it if I do not have Optimus?

I was going more for displaying the live map or inventory for example for games that support it.

If you don't have optimus, then it might work. However I'm not entirely sure.
