using real temp

i just replaced my processor and im not so sure i did the themal paste right.
when using real temp while gaming every 5-10 min i alt +tab out and check real temp and all of the cores temps are usually around 55-70 degrees Celsius but near the bottom where it says maximum the temps are always around 81-84 degrees .

i just upgraded the cpu from i5 3300 to i7 3770 this morning.
my room temp is around 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.
stock dell case and cooler.
i plan on upgrading the case and cooler but i wont be able to till after the first

i tinted the cpu and heatsink removed excess and applied a small amount of paste in a line like it said on as5 website but i applied a smaller line then they show because i was afraid of getting too much .

is it normal temp reading for gaming ?
should i not game till i can get a new case and cooler ?
does it sound like the thermal paste is on right ?

Install Intel XTU and let it run in the background. Then you can go back and check the graph to see how hot the CPU was. I usually apply a very very thin layer of AS5 with a credit card and I never ran into overheating issues.

With the stock cooler you are fine. It will self-throttle if it gets in danger.

Yeah, AS5 line method is what I usually go with (Though I don't use AS5) works fine.

That is the literal recorded maximum, not a recommendation. It records the current temperature and logs the lowest and highest points for each core.

Tjunction Max for Haswell CPUs is 105C. Anything below 90C is safe for everyday use. Though Above 80C is not recommended by general agreement. If it is that warm you don't have enough cooling. But if you only have to wait until the 1st to pick up a better cooler you shouldn't concern yourself with the longevity of the CPU.

I ran my i7-4770k at 100C for about twenty minutes while attempting a high overclock. Still working fine. (Until this weekend when I make attempt #3 with huge cooling upgrade)

ok i wont worry then. ive been running Intel XTU as mentioned above while gaming and it has never gone over 78 degrees..
