Bottom Line:
Any compound, based on silicone oil or grease, will work. Most of the fancy thermal pastes add metallic or ceramic particles to enhance thermal conductivity. I have used plain Dow Corning DC-4 silicone grease ($12 US for 5.3 Oz) with good results. Using tooth paste or mayonnaise or any other water based compound, will eventually dry up and fail. If you want to replace it every few months, fine. I prefer a long term solution. The main point is to apply a THIN layer of whatever you use. The edge of a credit card smooths it out well.
