Using two Nvidia graphics cards in one PC for audio and video (not SLI or Physx related), identical or not

Hello everyone!

First of all my apologies for making my first post here a question.
I have not been a member of a PC forum as far as I can remember but browsed a lot of them when Googling for answers of course.
I am a long time visitor of Tom's hardware though, as long as the site exists I guess.
Used 5 years of (now) antique consoles and computers before my folks had a 8088 in the house. After DOS I used Windows for 15 years, then deserted to OSX for about 15 years and am now moving back to Windows. Pretty much an oldtimer. 😉

I know there have been a lot of similar questions asked on this and other forums but they're always about SLI and Physx and that is not at all what my question is about. My question is about multiple HDMI outputs for sound and video.

I would like to use 2 Nvidia video cards in one PC.
I know that's possible but I'm not interested in using one for Physx or using them in SLI (though I have no problem with it if they have to be configured that way}.
I am also not inetersted in using a multi-monitor setup or anything like that.

So why then?
Well, I need multiple HDMI ports (4 or 5 actually) all putting out the same signal.
I would only use 2 of them at the same time though (one for video, 1 for audio) but I really want all of them to be connected so I can switch easily).
I need HDMI for sound output since it's the only way to output HD sound. USB and optical are limited to DD and DTS, they can't output Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master or higher.

So what do I want to connect?
- a monitor via Diplay Port (ultrawide)
- a TV via HDMI (4K HDR)
- VR glasses
- a Smyth Realiser (like an A/V receiver but for headphones)
- 2 soundbars (Atmos or at least TrueHD capable)

So how do I go about getting 4 to 5 HDMI ports? The only good way I know about is two video cards with 3 outputs or so. I tried a bunch of HDMI splitters but they're a real pain and none of them did output all I want, except HD Fury but that one only has two outputs.

And am I better off with two identical cards for what I want to do or can I get a good one for video and a cheap one for audio? Probably best if they'refrom the same generation if I do that, for the drivers, no? Like a 1080TI and a 1050 for example.

So would that work, would both cars ouput the same audio and video signal? I guess all ports would output both audio and video?
What problems can I expect? Driver configuration? Assigning the outputs in Windows control panel? Switching between screens/audio devices?

Any info you can share with me would be really welcome!

Hope this helps any(http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2593/~/how-do-i-setup-my-nvidia-based-graphics-card-to-work-with-my-hdtv%3F), i will continue my research on this, but would you mind telling me what gpu's you want to use?

Hi Aleks,

Wow, nice article, thank you!
I just skimmed through it but I'll have a nice read on my tablet in bed in a few minutes as it's really early morning here and I only slept a few hours.

The main GPU I want to use would a Gigabyte GTX 1080TI Xtreme since it has three HDMI outputs.
The second card would either be the same card with the 3 HDMI outputs or a cheaper 10 series card, prefrably from Gigabyte as well if I can find one that has at least two HDMI outputs. Didin't really look at the other Gigabyte cards yet as I was planning to get two identical 1080TI Xtremes but with the recent price increase it sure wouldn't hurt to check it out.

I would prefer to get the same generation and brand of cards so I can stick to the same software and driver.

And I just managed to make my new member post as well by the way. :)

Read the Nvidia guide. Using Display Port to HDMI adapters might make it work with one card as the Gigabyte card allows a mode where one can use 3 HDMI + 3 Display Ports at once.
I would have to find (active I guess) Display Port 1.4 to HDMI 2.0a adapters that can pass through Atmos. I think using the display ports for audio would be my best choice? I need to look into those adapters.
