Using windows media center with a hdtv as extended desktop but can\'t get sound

I am using my hdtv as an extended desktop. I am unable to get sound however despite using both hdmi and a separate stereo cable? What am I missing?

I have a working setup. PLease provide the detail of your PC (HW & SW) and i may be able to provide assistance
