I am replaying UW2 and it has eaten much of my time. It's way easier
than I remembered from when I played it back in 1994 or so. Maybe my
problem solving skill has mproved since I was 12 :-D I actually don't
remember too much of the game; I know basic plot elements but I have
forgotten how the world workd and whee you go to to get stuff.

Seriously, I almost feel like I put it on easy, but I know I didn't.

Id o have one question--If you jump on ice, you stop moving. How do
you get started moving again? As it stands, I just reload my game.

Oh, the stickman maze in the void? Totally sweet!!! A phrase I don't
use often, but it put a big grin on my face. Especially when it was
called, "an ancient realm." Hehehehe....

That's a bit like when I'm replaying old Thief missions that seemed hard
the first time. I guess my skills at Thief have progressed a lot since it
came out.

I think that last Wizardry game had a similar retro dungeon. It amazes me
what we put up with back then.

Not to sound like a moron (too late for that, eh?), but what is a "stickman
maze"?

I'm assuming it's the wireframe type dungeon - no texture maps or
anything. Very simplistic looking. :)

Aah, merci!

So the word "stickman" comes from the kind of "man" you would draw when
playing "hangman"?
That would be streckgubbe in swedish, "lineguy".

It also comes from the fact that that's the name of the monsters in there.
Their eyes even change to little crosses when you kill them.

Starting out by walking again worked for me back in the day. I haven't
played UW2 on a modern machine though, and I know some things work
differently on a much faster computer for some reason. Swimming being the
obvious one.

Search that place thoroughly. One of the most powerful weapons in the game
is hidden in there. Though I prefer StoneStrike or the Firedoom Axe
personally.

I forgot where the stone strike thingy was, but it didn't matter. I
just now killed Gotha with the ol' major-damage longsword you get from
the reaper. I swear I didn't have it on easy! Strange. I remember
her being harder, lol.

Iron Flesh helped, though...

Anyway, I went to the trouble of casting 'open' in another world and
navigating with the keyboard back to LB's bedroom, and using the
crosshair on his chest...But it still didn't open! Just what the heck
is in there, anyway?

I seem to recall crunchy eyeballs.

Don't ask me how I opened it, maybe you have to kill LB.

Those are in the equivalent Killorn Keep chest, as I recall.

Yeah, you just start walking. With practically no friction to push your
feet against, it's slow starting up, but you can build momentup if you
just keep the walking button down.

Another means of moving from a stop while on ice is the Standing Long
Jump (Shift-J), which will do just what is says - jump forward as far as
possible from a standstill. Useful for MANY jumps in both UWs. I far
refer it to a walking jump.

Interesting, most of the time I would try to walk, nothing would
happen. And when it did start moving extremely slowly, it was faster
just to load the old game and try sliding better, lol. I suspect that
process would have been notably slower back in the day...

I had forgotten about shift-J: That would have been really useful in a
lot of my jumps! Next time I play an old game I should re-read the
manual :p

Well, it STARTS, as you say, extremely slowly. But you pick up speed as
you go. Personally, I prefer to just slide around until I reach
something I won't slide on. Like plain floor.... or water. (At least you
don't freeze to death in the water there like physics dictates!)

But yeah, it's often easier to reload and start from scratch - when you
move onto ice from not-ice, you have the advantage of starting your
slide in motion, and thus not having to build up as I described above.

Heh. I remember most of the hotkeys from the UWs, notably all movement
ones. I'm a big one for using both keyboard and mouse when playing games.

it does not appear pickable, bashable, or keyable. It is a big

I just tried it again. For me, Ex Ylem worked fine on the chest, and it
contains three fresh eyeballs, and a ruby, an emerald and a sapphire (all
unblemished).

If you don't have any "action" selected (i.e. none of the icons on the
bottom right is lit), you don't even need to navigate with the keyboard.
Just go to another world, cast Open, and it'll stick on your mouse until
you right click somewhere on the map (or left click on your inventory, so
don't do that), so you can still use left-click to navigate. Then get to
the chest, look down, and right-click on it. It should say "The spell has
unlocked the chest", and then you can open it by right-click-dragging it.

Odd, for me it said "This spell has no noticible effect." Hmmm...none
of the actions at the bottom right were selected, either. Different

It's possible... my uw2.exe is 675968 bytes large and from Dec 22 1992.
I've been playing it with dosbox.

Although that they would change that aspect of the game seems strange...

Mine is 675,184 bytes from June 16, 1993.

I dunno, it wouldn't surprise me if they fixed the issue, since it is
a semi-cheat that lets you cast higher level spells in Britannia.

I'm using the WinXP patched version of the game. I wonder if that
affected the difficulty somehow. Hmm.
