VA-503A not suspending or hibernating.

I have a VA-503A based system running Windows XP Pro. When I shutdown and
select "Standby", the system seems to go into S1 power state where the hard
drives are spun down but power is still on to all of the other components.
I'd like for it to go into S3 state or "Suspend to RAM" where all power is
shutdown except for RAM. Anyone has any ideas on how to do this?

Also, if I choose hibernate, the system will write information to the
hiber.sys file and then shutdown. After a reboot, it will finish reading
the hibernation information and then just freeze.

Has anyone gotten the various ACPI suspend modes to work properly on their
VA-503A?

I'd like to get standby mode (ACPI S3) and/or hibernate mode (ACPI S4) to
work properly.

Hi, John.

I also have a VA-503A running WinXP Pro. As you say, S1 standby works just
fine. As far as I can tell, the BIOS does not support S3 Suspend-to-RAM, so
there is no way around that.

S4 hibernation does work perfectly for me. In general, problems coming out of
hibernation are either driver problems or BIOS problems. I am using the JN4116
BIOS, which you can find on the FIC FTP site (
ftp://ftp.fic.com.tw/motherboard/bios/socket7/va-503a/ ). Make sure your
drivers are up to date, or maybe try removing devices in case one of the
existing drivers is causing problems.

Rats... I was hoping to get S3 to work... I am running JN4116. I'll have
to look up the brochure for the VA-503A. I'm pretty sure suspend to RAM was
one of the features.

Good to know that S4 does work. A while back, I tried removing everything
from the box leaving only the hard drive and video card and had no luck with
S4. It hangs on startup after reading the entire disk image (the bar goes
all the way across). I'm afraid it's either my video card or some driver is
choking despite that fact the device is not there. I may have to reinstall
WinXP with no devices and see if S4 hibernation works.
