Guy was an idiot for using art asset from another game and then SELLING it.

Fair use instantly ends and copyright law kicks in.

There is only so many unique mace designs out there... and are we going to start comparing every art piece to another art piece found on the internet, just to make sure there's nothing too similar? This is getting ridiculous. Makes me sick that a lot of people (particularly on other forums) are actually demanding this guy go to prison or be severely fined.

[citation][nom]john_4[/nom]Yeah it's BS, the copyright system is broken/corupted, has been for a long time.[/citation]
Why should you have the right to make money off other people's work? It's not like there was a vague resemblance, it was apparently a blatant copy. If you work hard to make something, kindly explain to me how I have a right to take your work and profit from it

Actually this is an example of copyright law working just as it should.

Really? Point us to something you created (thus have copyright to) that is an asset to something else you created. We'll steal it, make money off it, and you don't get squat for your work. That ok with you?

[citation][nom]radon_antila[/nom]1) Distinctive art assets are considered intellectual property and thus, copyright. For example, the fireman's axe is NOT distinct, so any game developer can use the art of a fireman's axe in any game. But start with a fireman's axe then, for example, color it black, add a few more spikey bits and draw glowing runic symbols all over it and call it the "Sacred Axe of Malice" and it becomes distinctive enough to warrant copyright. In this case, that item happened to be Aion's "Marchutan's Blessed Mace".2) The article fails to mention that "Sithil's Summer Stash", the way to get this mace, was sold on Steam, and the banned modder would have been granted a cut of these sales. In short, Valve unwittingly sold the art asset another company owned because their community approved an art asset they shouldn't have.Btw, the above info was taken from the more detailed post on The Escapist.http://www.escapistmagazine.com/ne [...] ota-2-Mace[/citation]
You should have wrote the article lol much more clear explanation of what the violation was.

[citation][nom]rantoc[/nom]So what is DotA? Have it had over 11,5 mil players along with several TV commercials for the word to spread so wide that even non-gamers know what it is!? Since you compare DotA to WoW like it should be just as known...[/citation]
What is DotA?
