I think you answered your question there, as long as your party has some
balance and a few basics are covered have the characters that YOU want in
it, if you enjoy the game you can play trying different characters.
Personally I find the banter more important then skills (hence my current
party is rather light on bow) going for Vic and jahiera, kesley, jan, korgan
and myself a wizard slayer.
Not the best balance but what a lot of great banter, sarcasm and digs )
+ thx to a mod I have two ladies fighting over me )

I had imoen join very late and she had no problem fitting into my party, and
the frustration of so much going on at once (chapters 2-4 ) is what makes
BG2 one of the true greats.
