Vertical lines dell inspiron mini 1018 screen

i suddenly started getting multicolored vertical lines on my very seldom used dell inspiron mini 1018. sometimes, instead of lines, i get a solid white block, both of which take up approx. one third of my screen. please help!

It could be that the screen is going bad, or possibly the video card is failing. Screen is an easy fix, the video is actually on the motherboard and would require a board replacement.
