I know that drives can be mounted either vertically or horizontally, but is it a bad idea to change the position after the drive has been run one way for a while?

nope. it shouldnt.
I changed mine when i got my new case at christmas (vertical mount)

as long as you do not move it while rotating (still on) then you should be able to mount it any way you want.

diagonal or vertical or horizontal or all crazy!!!

as long as it remains in the position its in while going. e.g solidly mounted.

gyroscopic effects remember!!!

Ive moved it while running, but only very slowly, especially when tipping it.

Most drive mfrs say that you can mount them any way you want, but I think it still applies that they shouldn't be mounted more than 5 degrees from true level or vertical. But I still won't mount one with the circuit board up, and if I find one that way, I'll fix it! And I still think that horizontal is best.
