I have just purchased a HP Pavilion g6 (i3 cpu, 8gb ram) from Argos and it is soooo slow!! I am wondering if this is common for this laptop or if windows 8 just sucks the life out of it? When I say its slow, I mean REAL slow! it takes about 10 seconds to open a basic program, it hangs at every click of the mouse, I was trying to play a song that had been posted on Facebook earlier and it crashed completely. Up popped a screen telling me that it had crashed and it was gathering info to send to microsoft. Please help! I need to know if its just a crap laptop or if windows 8 just sucks.... Thanks in advance guys...

Well, you need to do some tweaking:

1. disable auto defragmaneting (drive/properties/tools/defragmentation)
2. disable scheduled scans from your antivirus
3. disable windows automatic updating
4. remove useless apps from the start menu (all the microsoft crap)
5. run "autoruns for windows" (google it) and disable useless startup programs (dont disable any drivers 😀)

If all the above havent had an impact on your laptop performance, then buy an SSD 😀. why? HDDs slow laptops down by 50% (imo)

delete all the OEM HP branded software on the laptop unless it says card reader, touchpad, driver or hotbar etc.

also install ccleaner and run the file cleaner then run the registry cleaner multiple times.

go onto the start menu, type services.msc
find the superfetch service, right click it and select properties.
on startup type select disabled and hit apply.
hit stop also to stop it currently running and then go ok.

also what antivirus are you using on the laptop?

It is a brand new laptop (2 days old) and It has only been used for basic internet.

Thanks! I will try these :)

It come with Norton pre-installed. Will it not affect my warranty if I delete most of the HP software?

no deleting software does not effect the warranty and the HP software is all crapware, if norton is only a trial then delete it also since its a system hog and get AVG free instead.

did it come pre installed with itunes? it is also a bit of a system hog also, i would remove it and use another music player if you dont need it.

also once you have deleted all the software, download ccleaner and run the file cleaner then run the registry cleaner multiple times.

Thanks mauller07 .

Norton is a 60 day trial so I will delete that immediately. I have McAfee internet security 2013 that come with a bundle of stuff I bought with the laptop, Do you think McAfee is worth installing?
I do use Itunes unfortunately, stupid Iphone...

afraid to tell you but McAfee is horrible for system performance from what i know of older versions, as bad as norton, but i haven't used or heard about 2013 so its only worth a try, uninstall stuff first to speed up the pc then stick on mcaffee but dont activate it, if the pc slows down badly then get rid of it and use AVG.

Thanks for your input guys. I have tried what crisan_tiberiu and mauller07 have suggested and it seems to be working much better now. Thanks again for your help everyone :)

Thanks mate, I will take a look at that now and get rid of that awful iTunes! :)

Go to taskmanager and click on performance tab and check whether your disk usage is high like 100% or not
if has high disk usage then DO this
a. Press windows + R key from the keyboard.

b. Select the option Control Panel and All control panel items then System.

c. Click on Advanced system settings.

d. Under performance, click on settings.

e. Go to Advanced tab, Under Virtual memory, click on Change.

f. UN-check "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" check box.

g. Select your windows drive (where OS is installed).

h. Click on Custom size radio button.

i. Set Initial size equivalent to your RAM size in MB.

j. Set Maximum size to twice of your RAM size in MB.

k. Click on Set.

l. Click on OK thrice.

m. Restart your system.

If it still very slow then perform a clean boot

Or TRY THIS
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2681286

do the above but it would be better to set the page file to 512MB min and 1024MB max.

might be good to post a pic of whats all installed on the laptop, it could still have a lot of crap you might not know to remove.

its honestly disgusting how they sell these laptops most of the time.

Ok thanks guys.
So what would be the difference in setting page file to 512MB/1034MB and not 8192MB/16448MB as Shaik Farooq instructed?

I have the same problem. bought a compaq lapto (HP shit inside) with windows 8.1 two days ago and it runs slower than my dell form dec 2010.

I will clean up according to your instrucitons, and thanks for that guys,

I use AVAST as an anti-virus/malware. is AVG now better again than AVAST?

does anyone have a recent comparison or opinion (like 2013 or 2014) about either one?

thanks agin
