Question Very slow USB 2.0 speeds (and terrible 3.0 speed for new PCIe card)

I've never been happy with my USB ports but I never realized just how bad they are until I've started upgrading components and testing.

I purchased a USB 3.0 PCIe card and the speeds seemed to be no better. So I downloaded Blackmagic and tested the speeds:

  • USB 2.0 slots:
    • Write: 8-10 mps
    • Read 33 mps
  • USB 3.0 card slots:
    • Write: 3-7 mps
    • Read: 60 mps

At first I thought the issue was the driver for the 3.0 card (and that still might be true) but:

1. I'd like to improve the old USB 2.0 ports which is terrible

2. I wonder if the problem causing the 2.0 issue might be bottlenecking the 3.0 card?

All help appreciated. Not really sure where to start.

Thanks

full system spec?
write to what exact?

Sure, sorry. I was writing to a USB 3.0 thumb drive, but you asking a good question made me test it with an external HDD using Blackmagic:
  • EXTERNAL USB HDD
  • USB 2.0 slots:
    • Write: 28 mps (up from 10 on the thumb drive)
    • Read 33 mps
  • USB 3.0 card slots:
That's slow for 2.0, correct?
