Very Very Strange computer problem! It has a mind of its own. !!

This happens every 1-3 hours when I'm using the computer. All of a sudden the screen goes black and the computer starts up again. As if I just yanked the power cord out and stuck it back in.

At first I thought It might be the computer overheating, so I took the side panels off and used realtemp to monitor my CPUs temp and used ati drivers to monitor my video cards temp... Nothing was wrong, but I still got the problem.

Then I thought it might be a virus or something, so I ran a complete scan using Nod32 and malwarebytes anti-malware.

Nothing, after that I thought it might be the RAM stick, so I removed one ram and waited.. crash. And then I removed the other and replaced the first one... still shutdown\crash.


What is going on? I thought it might be the power supply, but I've read on the web that if that was the case... the computer wouldn't turn on anymore, the PSU would just fail.

Help me please? This is very frustrating!

First Go to my computer and right click.
Advanced tab.
Start up and Recovery Settings.
Uncheck the "Automatically Restart" checkbox.
Now you will get a blue screen error stating the problem.

Also
Check the capacitors on the motherboard.
If any are swollen ,rounded on top ,or leaking a brown ooze, the caps are bad.
Time for repair or replacement.

Post the exact temps for the components and let us be the jugde whether they are good or bad

-secondly, just because you scanned with NOD32 and malwarebytes doesn't mean scrap...you can still have a virus. And not but's new viruses are constantly being released, many can easily slip through even the best of the best scanners ie malwarebytes and a-squared.

-Secondly, after that set a timer between crashes, it might be that the crashes are set to happen an exact time after start-up so try that a couple times. If all else fails, reinstall OS, with a full reformat.

What version of windows you running?

I would run a memtest86 just in case both sticks are bad. (Doubtful, but worth a shot)

I also wouldn't rule out the psu, if possible try a swap.

Clearing the cmos is always a good thing to try.

Can you not get a bluescreen? Is your computer's auto restart on error enabled? (Google to turn it off so you can see the bsod)

Have you recently installed any new hardware (external included)?

Try using onboard graphics if you have then to rule out the gpu (assuming you aren't already).

Could we get your system specs including os?

Is there any way you can rule out software? Maybe another hd w/ a fresh windows. Also a bluescreen to show what caused windows to fail (driver and error code) will help that as well.

I am running win7.



I looked at event logs, the times range from 1 hour to 3 hours being the most I've seen.

The temps are about: 55 for the GPU, ATi says about 70 is normal for a 4870x2.

And idle at 35c for the CPU, it changes to 40, 42, 43 but i've never seen it go higher. I haven't checked it under load, but it keeps crashing when I'm doing normal things like surfing the web and watching videos... Or just leaving it on to download something..

No, no new hardware... nothing.

And bluescreen does not show up. It just goes black.. then the computer starts booting up. I turned the auto restart off, but It hasn't crashed yet.

Asus maximus II formula
4 gigs corsair ram, 2gig x 2.
4870x2 video card
500 gig samsung harddrive
cooler master cosmo 1000
750 watt corsair powersupply

1. Disable Automatic restart as instructed above.

2. Check Event Viewer for error / warming messages.

3. Check for presence of *.dmp files

4. Run OCCT torture tests foir SPU , memory, GPU and PSU....if it failes, problem identified....if it makes it thru 60 minute test, check graphs for temperature and voltage anomalies.
