VGA to DVI-D adapter not working. Monitor model too old?

Hello, I recently got a new computer, but the old monitor doesn't work when I plug it in. The computer has a DVI-D (dual link) port and the monitor has VGA, so I bought an adapter just like this one: http://s474818768.onlinehome.us/list/dvivga/011.jpg but nothing shows when I plug everything in.
Can you please help with this? Thanks

To go from DVI-D to VGA you need an active converter. a simple passive adapter like you bought will not work.
