OK.... so I have a work computer that's just hooked up to the normal 15 inch monitor. I have an idea of wanted to have a second display with sound on a 42 inch flat TV that is 10 feet away. It looks like I have 2 vga ports on the back of my desktop. Of course the one going from the monitor to the tower is vga male male. The other one on the tower is female.... anyone know what that's for?

What I'm thinking I need to achieve the screen mirroring and sound through the flat screen is a...

Cable Matters VGA Monitor Y Splitter 1 Foot

Then a vga to hdmi converter

VGA to HDMI Full HD 1080P HDTV Video Converter Box Adapter for PC Laptop Audio

Problem is the input on the converter is looking for a male but the 2 ends on the splitters are looking for a male... so do I need a male/female cable to go from the splitter to the converter to achieve this??

Male/female vga cable

Thanks for the help in Advance

Uhh, what?

You said you're using a male to male VGA cable on your current monitor, that's the way it's supposed to work, a male cable plugs into a female port.

And you say the other port on the tower is a female port, that would make sense as a second display output.

But try watching this video and see if this answers your question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYi__xzfct0

If you're geting your cables/ports wrong, like if the "vga female" port is like this: http://www.techiwarehouse.com/i/Motherboard/Motherboard2.jpg
Then it's not a VGA port it's a COM port that's used for old printers and scanners, ect.

OK watched the video... pretty much what I thought... since his is on a laptop and mines a desktop, if the get the vga y splitter I'll jus have to get a separate male to male to hook to splitter then the vga hdmi converter

That MIGHT not work. That might only mirror the image if you split the cable.

You'd be better off getting any graphics card like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127851 and not having to bother with converters.
