VHSC No Sound

Hi, very new to this and having a blast. I have fumbled and trial and erred
myself up to producing dvds of dv footage that I shoot and now just need to
keep learning and getting better.

However, I have been recently stumped trying to get some old VHSC tapes
converted. No sound.

The old palmcorder is Panasonic PV-A227. The tapes are JVC EHG HiFi VHSC,
they play well, with sound direct to tv from camcorder and the tapes play
well with sound in a VCR. But camera to editing pgm, no sound.
I don't just mean at capture, I mean no sound ever.

The firewire came with Ulead 5, the All In Wonder came with Pinnacle 8, I
also have a Roxio and have also tried the windows movie maker, I've tried
them all... so, I'm ruling out the pgm as the culprit. In pgm settings I'm
using video composite as I have AV out of the camcorder into RCA jacks and
into the ATI All In Wonder.

I'm thinking I have sound turned off somewhere, but can't find where. Sound
is great on dv captures.

Any ideas? Thanks for reading.

Do you have the audio cables connected to the proper input on your
soundcard? In the soundcard mixer, is the correct input selected for
recording, and the volume level set?

Ah ! Thanks,

Pretty sure about that. It's all color coded. The RCA jacks go into a box
which then goes into the card through what looks like an Svideo connection.
Anyway, that connection is the only one of it's kind on the back of the
computer and it's purple, same purple as the Svideo jack. If I've managed to
mess that up, just shoot me now, please.

Ok, soundcard mixer. Not sure. A double click on Creative vol control brings
up something called surround mixer.
Once we get past vol/bass/treb, I'm lost.
There are bars for Wave MP3,MIDI SYNTH, CD Audio, Line In. Then a bar that
can be a changed between Aux-S/PDIF-CD digital and mic. Another bar that
changes betweenS/PDIF-TAD In-CD digital and mic. Then a record bar that can
switched between "what you hear"- S/PDIF In- AnalogMix(Line/CD/Aux/TAD/PC) -
Aux - Mic and wave/MP3.

Hmm, that analog mix feature on the rec bar looks interesting...
Ok, before I start playing Russian Roulette with the possibilities in the
advanced settings, am I even in the right place? Does this help you help me,
at all?

S-Video handles video, but not audio. But I'm not totally familiar
with the All-in-wonder hardware, so I can't say for sure what type of
connector it has on it or whether it handles audio too.

Most inexpensive capture cards just do video capture, leaving the audio
part up to your sound card. In such a case, you wire the video to the
capture card, and the audio to the sound card.

Not sure. Depends on if the AIW does audio capture. If it does, then
the sound card mixer should have no effect.

Check the documentation to see what the AIW card does audio-wise, and to
make sure that everything is wired properly.

Actually the exterior box has inputs for RCA jacks and an S-Video input, but
what comes out of that box and into the All-in-wonder card is something
else. It looks similar to an S-video but it is obviously something that can
deliver the signal from either the RCA or the S-vid.
Anyway there seems to be no sound support, but there is good news.

The cable that comes with the AIW has many cables, including hook ups for
two monitors and a few things that I doubt I'll ever use. Among those is a
regular looking jack that just happens to fit into the line in for the sound
card.
Presto, we have sound. Thank you very much!

I wasn't ready for the AIW to not handle sound, at least it has the wire you
need to plug into the sound card right on it's cable.
Thanks again. I can now put these tapes to bed for good.
