For a free unlimited editing software i'd recommend Windows Movie Maker, its not packed full of many features but, if your just starting out its perfect.You can also upload directly to YouTube with it.

For simple stuff I use Avidemux, which is free and open source. For transcoding, resizing etc, I use Handbrake, again free and open source. Finally for normalizing volume I use aacgain / mp3gain, but I don't think there is a Windows variant of that. Howver most people don't care about sound normalization anyway.
