I have a PC that I purchased about 6 weeks ago. Specs provided below.

I get game crashes and very low FPS in multiplayer games. When I play single player in Far Cry 3, Battlefield 3, etc the games run on high settings beautifully with no troubles. Once I play a match against other people or play an MMO where other playable characters are around, my Frames Per Second plummets to as little as zero and becomes unplayable. This happens about 99% of the time. Rarely, I have been able to play a few multiplayer matches before a crash or the FPS makes it unplayable.

I have done a clean install on my nVidia GTX 650 drivers.
I have lowered the graphics settings to lowest possible in the games and the problem persists.
My nVidia card is a Gigabyte, so I downloaded their OC Guru to check performance and here are some results. Some look weird to me, but I don't know enough about it, so hopefully some light can be shed...Playing an MMO called TERA, I went into a secluded area (little to no playable characters around) when I first logged into the game and was getting 48 - 58 degrees for the GPU temp and a fan speed of 65 - 66% and an FPS of 35 - 54. When I went into a largely populated area with other playable characters, the temp was 38 - 47 degrees, fan speed was 48 - 58%, FPS slowly plummeted to between 0 - 5. The stats that I thought looked extra weird: GPU Voltage dipped to 0.00 , then went back up to 1.100 and dipped again every few seconds. Memory clock peaked at 5500MHz, but regularly dipped to 1620MHz. GPU clock also went from 1111 MHz to 540MHz. These also happened every few seconds...fluctuating up and down.

Here is some additional info that may help narrow down the problem. I went into "Performance Information and Tools" and uncovered some info:

It says "Adjust visual settings to improve performance". When I look further it says "Current visual settings may not result in the best computer performance. To improve performance, you can try closing some windows or lowering screen resolution". When I look even further into the Event Viewer it had many entries for "Event 500 Diagnostics Performance". "Scenario: video memory resources are over-utilized and there is thrashing happening as a result. Reducing the number of running programs and open windows may help resolve this condition."

My previous system which was a Quad core with only a nVidia GTS250 card in it never ran into these problems. It could run Steam (video game launcher), 2 games at a time, several webpages, email, and iTunes. Which is, at most, what I have opened at any given time.

My current specs and Windows Experience info below:

Solution
definitely too friggin hot. don't use the machine. find a friend or neighbor or somebody from the local computer fixer upper store to remove the heat sink and clean and reapply thermal paste. if that's not the issue the heat sink may not be installed correctly. regardless, it needs to be removed and replaced. death of the processor is at hand.
You aren't running into issues with the graphics memory. The GTX 650's GPU is not even nearly fast enough to have issues with 1GB of memory and its memory bandwidth should be plenty for its GPU too.

Your issues seem more like erratic throttling. There may be issues with a driver setting such as GPU accleration in some programs causing them. For example, some programs that run video will cause this issue when they run while you play a game. This may have not happened with your older card because before you updated the drivers, the drivers were properly configured.

Thank you for the quick reply.

This is an entirely new system and I did not add any hardware to the system post purchase (not sure if that is important).

Any suggestions on a fix to this? The manufacturer has offered to send out a new GTX 650 for an exchange, but I want to make sure the problem isn't deeper than that.

In my fumbling around to find a fix, I also attempted to update my BIOS drivers from the manufacturer's website ( http://www.asrock.com/MB/overview.us.asp?cat=Download&os=Win864&Model=H61M-HVS ). I can get all of the most recent drivers dated 1/13/13 downloaded except for the VGA driver (Not sure if this is important, but I didn't attempt to install the floppy driver or the appcharger driver as I have no need for either, but if this could be preventing the VGA driver from installing, I'd be happy to try.) When trying to install the VGA driver I get the error message: "This computer does not meet the requirements for installing the software".

As you can tell, I am not very knowledgeable about these issues, so any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

Edit: added website link to motherboard drivers.

Sorry, I mistook old system for same system but now with upgrades, my mistake for not paying enough attention, but it doesn't change what I said about the issue much.

The fix should be to disable program/Windows GPU acceleration. Unfortunately, some drivers seem intent on making that very difficult 🙁

I oftentimes suggest completely uninstalling the graphics drivers and then disabling the acceleration before re-installing the drivers. However, if VGA drivers are having trouble being updated, that implies that there may be more to this issue. You might be better off sending the system to the OEM for them to have a look, especially if you're not sure of what you're doing.

I just did your recommended test. I changed the resolution in the Control Panel and changed the resolution in the game settings as well (both to 1024x768). The lowered resolution made the graphics look much worse, but outside of that nothing changed. The Frames Per Second issue still persists. Almost immediately, it became so choppy that it was unplayable.

I did your test with Battlefield 3. A 64 person online match. I don't seem to have any issues with single player/campaign modes. Only seems to be an issue with online games with other playable characters: MMOs, Black Ops II multiplayer, Battlefied 3 multiplayer, etc.

let's try the heat issue first.
try "core temp" to watch temps. what happens?

pull side off the case. try gaming. what happens?

remove heat sink and fan from processor. clean off and reapply thermal paste. game, watch temps. what happens after burn in?

are the case fans clean and are they in push pull configuration?

is the heat-sink clean of dust build up on the processor and on the video card?

what kind of connection do you have.......... did I ask that above?

Before starting up a game...
Core 0: 54 - 58
Core 1: 57 - 61
Core 2: 56 - 61
Core 3: 55 - 62

After playing Battlefield 3 multiplayer for a few seconds:

Core 0: 104
Core 1: 105
Core 2: 105
Core 3: 103

The Core Temp icon went from green to yellow pretty quickly while playing the game. It also went to red briefly a few times.

Pulling the side off of the case doesn't seem to change anything.

I bought this as a pre-built and don't feel comfortable removing the heat sink and fan, etc. If this is imperative to solving the issue, I will attempt this. Please advise.

The fans are clean. I don't know what "push pull" configuration is.

The heat-sink is clean of dust build up on both the heat sink and video card.

I have Roadrunner Lightning. I believe it's at 30Mbps. Cable modem. I run an Ethernet cable from the router to the PC.

Solution

Well, I'm glad we narrowed down the issue. Thanks for hanging in there with me. I really appreciate you and blazorthon's input.

I got a little curious this morning and decided to watch the fans inside the chassis as they turned. I don't know why I didn't pay closer attention to this sooner. What I found: the processor fan only spins at a 1/4 of a turn about every second. The fan on the graphics card and the fan on the back of the chassis are running constantly. I checked the 4-pin connection into the motherboard. That seems fine. I turned the system off and the fan blades rotate smoothly with just a light tap.

Could this be causing my graphics issues?

I immediately thought this was a malfunctioning CPU cooler fan, but when I looked at my motherboard manufacturer's site at BIOS updates, I found something that is giving me some worry ( http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.us.asp?cat=Download&os=BIOS&Model=H61M-HVS ) . There was an update in version 2.40 that says: "Modify some VGA card with Intel inbox fan; CPU fan does not rotate issue."
When I pull up my Performance Information & Tools in Windows it states: BIOS version/date: American Megatrends Inc P2.50, 9/18/2012. Could this be inaccurate? Could it have reverted to an older BIOS version that is not showing in Performance Info? When I look at my motherboard manufacturer's site, I see that the latest version is 2.50, but the date is 9/21/12. Does the difference in dates mean anything?

Would an update to the BIOS fix anything? If so, is that something a novice (that follows directions well) can do?

A lot of questions, I know. Thanks again for the help.

EDIT: added motherboard website

for giggles plug into another fan header. okay if it's a 3pin. should spin constantly and spin faster..... just for a test. and yes, I would update my BIOS.

maybe asrock lets you do it from the desktop? perhaps there's software for it? maybe on the disc that came with the motherboard?

Can I plug into any open fan header? Is it correct to assume that the "header" is what I'm plugging in to?

It seems as if my only option to update the BIOS is an "instant flash" from ASrock's website ( http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.us.asp?cat=Download&os=BIOS&Model=H61M-HVS ). Their warnings frighten me: "For any damages caused by improper operation of downloading or updating BIOS, ASRock® assumes no responsibility. Before you download or update the BIOS, please read below '(How to Update)' carefully." I'm happy to try it if it could fix things, though. Any dangers/tips I should know of, first?

Final question (for this thread): Is it worth updating the BIOS even though in Performance and Tools it states I have the 2.50 version and 2.50 shows as the most recent version on the motherboard website? The BIOS has a different release date and name, but same version number.

if you have the latest version don't mess with it. you mentioned something about a BIOS update inre to the fan not spinning........

the fan, there's a similar header ( 3pin ) above the pci-e slot and one at the bottom of the board. guess you can reach the top one? just plug your 4pin cpu cooler fan into that. see if the fan runs normally.

and if it does, try gaming for a little bit. keep your eyes on the temperature using that program.

Sorry about the confusion. I show as having the most recent version number BIOS, but a previous version supposedly fixed a problem with the fan not rotating. Just wondering it was possible that I reverted to a previous BIOS even though System Details in Windows says otherwise.

I plugged the fan into the CHA FAN header on the bottom of the board. It did the same thing even when the game was on. It turned about 1/4 of a turn ever 1 - 2 seconds. Turn, stop, turn, stop, etc. It doesn't make full rotations and spin like the GPU or rear chassis fan.

Do you think that's a bad fan? Or, could this be the motherboard issue that was supposed to be fixed in a previous BIOS update ?

that's what I'm trying to figure out. do you have another cpu cooler with a fan on it with the same fan connection so you can see if the header are bad?

do you have a system fan that you can put on/glue on/set on/tape on the cpu cooler after removing the fan that is there?

one with a 4pin molex connector.......... or maybe you can pull a fan from the case and put that over the cpu heat sink and see if it cools the cpu down.?

the BIOS............. leave it alone. the last fix should be there, but I've already had to update the same BIOS incrementally on other boards in the past. Lets work on the cooling the cpu thing first.

I have a fan in my old, PC. The old PC doesn't power on anymore, but the fan may still be functioning. The connection looks the same as my current connection. It's 4-pin, but how do I know if it's molex?

Update:

I ordered a Thermaltake Silent 1156 CPU Cooler ( http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/ttWWW/Product.aspx?C=1134&ID=1905#Tab0 ). I installed it and my PC is running perfectly.

Core temps at idle: 20 - 28 degrees
Core temps while playing graphic intense games: 45 - 47 degrees.

I picked this CPU Cooler because the reviews mentioned that it was one of the easiest to install (a huge plus for me) and, of course, that it worked well.

Odd thing is that I uninstalled the stock cooling unit that wasn't working and put it into a friend's PC and it worked fine. I thought for sure that meant it was a motherboard/BIOS issue, but I went ahead and tried to install the new Thermaltake unit anyway and, much to my surprise, it works great.

Thanks again for all of the help. I really, really appreciate it.
