Video RAM Not Being Fully Utilized

Hello everyone,

I work for an architecture firm and we use high end PC's for modeling in Revit, AutoCAD and various other programs. We discovered something weird in regards to the video RAM of our computers: The video RAM on our Win 7 machines is not being fully recognized/utilized, but our Win 10 machines are recognizing/utilizing all of them video RAM.

We use GTX 980 desktop cards with 8 Gbs of video RAM, the Win 7 computers are only recognizing 4 Gbs of that video RAM. While the Win 10 computers are using all 8 Gbs. Our Win 7 machines are using a 64-bit Enterprise OS.

We only just discovered this issue and are beginning discussion on why this is happening.

Any suggestions on troubleshooting steps that we should take?

I'm not aware of any desktop GTX 980 cards with 8GB of VRAM. Every 980 I have ever seen has 4GB of VRAM. After doing some google searches it looks like there are some GTX 980M laptop GPUs that have 8GB of VRAM though.

Are you sure your 980 GPUs have 8GB of VRAM? Are you sure they aren't GTX 1080 GPUs or mobile GPUs?

Edit: Run a free program called GPU Z. It will tell you exactly what GPU you have and how much VRAM it has on board.

Are you sure your 980 GPUs have 8GB of VRAM? Are you sure they aren't GTX 1080 GPUs or mobile GPUs?

My aplogies, they are using GTX 980M's.

Are you sure they are all 8GB models? It looks like the 980M comes in both 4GB and 8GB variants.

Unfortunately I don't know much about mobile GPUs since I always go with desktop builds. If they are 8GB models and only 4GB is being recognized I don't know how to fix that problem. You are going to need someone else to jump in here.
