I am looking to start YouTube and streaming as a part time thing to do over the upcoming summer holidays.

I have run some trials as to try and get a good idea of what i am doing and ,as advised by people, i am using a separate drive for my videos.

however, the storage sizes on this drive are really small and i need a new drive. When deciding which one to buy i realised i have no idea how much space i need.

i will be using the MP4 codec and recording in 1080p at 30fps for videos as long as 1.5 hours.

How much space do i need?

May I suggest to convert all your files to DNxHD since the format you're using is broadcast friendly. Lower file sizes, no noticeable quality loss, and easier to work with while editing. In the long run this is a good option worth considering. As far as a second drive for storage is concerned, I would buy a WD Red drive, 2 TB seems to be great value right now, and put the two in a RAID 1 configuration using BIOS, if your motherboard supports this. Eventually you'll run out, but if you don't know you'll keep doing this, then it's going to take a while to fill up a 1 TB or 2 TB drive completely with video.

All the best!

the file size of the video is highly dependent on the bit rate you use. take for example, FRAPS will eat gigs worth of space fore a minute of FHD video where as YouTube can deliver a full hour of content for around a gig. (FRAPS records at really high bit rates, where as YouTube uses highly compressed video)

For a really obtuse idea. if you were to record at 100MB per second. you would use 6GBs in a minute, or 540GBs at 90 minutes. but, more than likely you will be in the 30Mb per second* range so, 225MB per minute, or 20.25GB at 90 minutes. So my suggestion, buy a large and fast hard drive and forget about calculating the storage space needed. 3TB drives can be had for around 100 USD.
