About one in every six media files I have download give great picture, but no
sound. Most of the time I get sound just fine, and at first I thought it was
just a fluke, you know, occasional bad file, but it has happened too
frequently now. I just updated my codecs, and my sound drivers are up to
date. Any setting configuration that may lead to some files playing sound
fine, but others not?

Do these files that don't play have any common charactersitics? ie they all
come from the same place, whereas the ones which play come from somewhere
different? What format are the ones which don't play, avi/wmv etc? Which
codec were they made with, divx/dv etc?

All files were .avi, and all were aquired via a file-sharing utility. Most
had comments from third parties who cited the files as excellent, so I think
the problem is on my end, just not sure where.

AVI files come in mnay differnt sorts, as avi is just a file wrapper, one of
the most popular for file download being divx. Use Gspot from headbands to
analyse the video you have to tell you which codec was used adn then track
this down.
