Uh, that IS their 3D driver. Click linux, then Graphic Driver, then pick the card. In the 9800 Series for example there are 3 drivers there for 3 different versions of XFree86. Those are the 3d OpenGL drivers.

My point is you don't know what you're talking about, yet you're giving advice like you know that ATI doesn't have 3d support, and assume that there are 3rd party drivers.

The link on the download page says: "ATI Proprietary Linux Driver 3.2.8 Download". Following the links on the page you linked leads to a <A HREF="http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/readme0328.txt" target="_new">README</A> outlining what the driver does.

I really don't know what else you need in order to deem a driver "supported" but it can't be much more than this, as nvidia provides the same things. A good readme, a driver download, and full conifig/install instructions.

I'll grant you that nvidia has support for their old cards for sure, and ati doesn't, but the original poster is looking at getting a new card. At least for his purposes there is no difference in the level of support by either company.

Some day I'll be rich and famous for inventing a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.

Hate is a strong word...you must live your life through the internet. Sad.
WTF? it's a figure of speech, used quite often. All i was saying is that i prefer ATI, BUT that in this case i would have to say nvidia is the clear winner because he's looking for good linux support. And ati relies on 3rd parties to write their linux drivers

i got a leadtek 4200 128mb from gameve.com for $91... u can get the vivo model for $93 but you only get 800x600 tv output then vs 1024x768... ive never used the inputs and never will so i went with the $91 model.
theres no better 4200 that i could find for under $100
the heatsink is massive and should allow for o/c'ing to 4600 or 4800 speeds.
dont worry i'll keep ya updated!

you dont sound like you know what you are talking about, instead of insulting.. just show me where it says they offer 3d support in those drivers and it would be a done argument!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'm referring to <A HREF="http://mirror.ati.com/support/faq/linux.html#3d" target="_new">this page and this section for my ATI driver analysis on 2D support only and no 3D support</A>...

NV linux drivers DO have full 2D and 3D acceleration... I know because one of my roommates is a Linux freak!
We prefer quality video cards with exceptional support from the chipset manufacturer.

And the reason I pointed out why ATI doesnt support their older cards because its important to note that... <i>because</i> if they dont support their cards that are old NOW, then what are they going to do when the new cards they have- get old?
I mean, its easy to assume or say something that attempts to belittle that statement, but, the facts show that NV more fully supports their product with software support... BOTH old and new.. and thats a fact evident today.

Thats kind of the bottom line.

I can't believe I have to step you through this. You didn't even READ the readme file I linked did you?

The OpenGL implementation that comes with the driver...

1. To check, if 3D acceleration is working properly, use the
'fglrxinfo' program installed together with the FireGL 8700/8800 driver.

To run the test program enter:

fglrxinfo

Typical output information (3D acceleration is working properly)
may read like this:

OpenGL vendor string: ATI
OpenGL renderer string: FireGL 8700/8800
OpenGL version string: 1.2.1234 (1.2.3)

This was just an example for the FireGL 8700/8800, but the same goes for any of the cards in fact here is mine:

silverpig@dirac silverpig $ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Radeon 9800 Pro Athlon (3DNow!)
OpenGL version string: 1.3 (X4.3.0-3.2.8)

That was all very clearly laid out in the readme file to which I linked.

Furthermore, I personally installed these very drivers. They are running right now. Quake3 runs in fully accelerated OpenGL mode on my R9800 Pro at 121.9 fps at 1600x1200. glxgears runs at ~4500 fps.

My point is you do NOT know what you're talking about, yet you give advice as though you do. The ATI drivers fully accelerate 3d in linux. THAT is the bottom line.

I have never used an ATI card in linux, and I still won't because I chose the Abit OTES. But I have a beginner's guide from Sudhian media that clearly shows a link to a page with ATI 3D drivers.

I do think they're actually developed by someone else, not ATI, but Linux users are used to using 3rd party drivers.

By the way, if anybody is interested, I chose the OTES because of my small case. It will make a difference in my case temperatures. I would've picked the 9600 pro if I could have found a "VGA silencer" from Artic-cooling. Those things are very cool, but I couldn't find one anywhere so I went with Abit and the OTES system.

I read it after I had already posted.. I just was to lazy to edit my post.

LOL, I dont know what I'm talking about because I didnt know they added opengl support in linux...
that doesnt mean that everything else i've said is false.. because it still stands.

I'm not keeping tabs on ATI driver support (because it is usually so lackluster)... I read that page I linked you to awhile back and still thought it was true..
looks like ATI needs to update their info. Didnt mean to search their site for info and got something outdated.

Do you know what you are talking about? You make for a good fanboy but how many certifications and degrees do you have?
Chill out man. Its just crappy ATI driver support we're talking about.. not your mother.

I could just imagine you in the corner holding your ATI saying "my preeecious..."

Yeah man, you should know by now; when you point out where a certain individual has made a mistake you must be a Fanboi, and it's your fault for making the mistake of pointing out the error or actually reading what he writes. He on the other hand is blameless 'cause it was just laziness that made him do it, not Fanboism.

Why else would someone have a siggy that points out he isn't a fanboi unless it had be said of that person so many times that it became necessary. Now it's used as a shield to hide behind.

As one so called 'fanboi' to the another just be satisfied you proved your point, and move on. Nothing left to gain here, just more time to lose, trust me.

I've got 2 ATI cards and 4 nVidia cards sitting here. I bought nVidia in the past (from tnt2, gf 256 DDR, gf2 gts) because they were the best cards then. I've now bought ATI since (radeon LE, Radeon 9800 Pro AIW) because they are the best for what I wanted to do when I bought them. If ATI starts sucking balls and XGI comes out with some crazy stuff I'll get an XGI card next. Whatever.

Some day I'll be rich and famous for inventing a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.

Exactly. And the next Generation is a whole new ballgame too.

Plonk down money on the best, no matter who makes it, otherwise you're just throwing away your money for vanity.

I still wish XGI posed more of a threat to both the leaders, just to shake things up a bit. If they did we'd likely have seen the series 4 cards before the new year not after it.

I admit that FAQ does seem outdated, and even I was confused for a moment at the apparent conflict in information.

I don't have any pieces of paper saying I know what I'm talking about, but I do have a fully functional linux system running the hardware and software being discussed in this thread. Not that it matters, but I also have most of 2 degrees under my belt as well.

Of course this card is my preciousssss... I dropped a lot of cash on it and it's a great performer.

Well, you are correct about the opengl issue.
Enjoy the card... my 9800 pro was a great card for the most part.. it does bring a 'little' tear to my eye to see it go!

hey dude, notice that me and him went back and forth.. he was right in the end.. yet pointed out he understood why I thought what I did?
Then I admitted I was wrong ultimately?
Learn some humility and get over things.

As one so called 'fanboi' to the another just be satisfied you proved your point, and move on.
Who needs to move on?
Next time you speak about me, speak to me- instead of acting like a little woman.

Whatever bud. I got involved in this 'cause once again you degraded your discussion to personal attacks and calling people fanbois, a sure sign that you can't support your argument by any other means.

These comments towards SP were unwarranted and just another example of your inability to express yourself without resorting to cheapshots;

"<font color=purple>Do you know what you are talking about? You make for a good fanboy but how many certifications and degrees do you have?
Chill out man. Its just crappy ATI driver support we're talking about.. not your mother.

I could just imagine you in the corner holding your ATI saying "my preeecious..."</font color=purple> "

Definitely a case of projecting your insecurities onto others again.

This will likely be the LAST time I speak directly to you, you are a waste of time to deal with. I will speak of you and of what you say if I so chose. Your personal attacks won't draw me into wasting more time on you, nor to avoid commenting on your BS.

Next time you speak about me, speak to me- instead of acting like a little woman.
Once again projecting your insecurities onto others. Do you have a cerificate proving your manliness since you're so focused on it?

Me, I'm moving on, because you're not worth spending any more time on. You have nothing to offer anyone here other than empty personal attacks and fanboi BS (despite your attempt to disarm people with your siggy).

If you can't defend your opinions without it getting personal, then that's your problem, not mine. I'll leave you to reveal in whatever snide remarks you've decided to contribute to this thread. As the original poster has all the info he needs I'm done with this thread, like everyone else here.

Ok Ape. Take it to heart, if you want.
I guess this is just my debating forum for me. If you ever do decide to let go whatever animosity you have for me, know that I dont have any real hard feelings towards you.

ps- Silverpig and me had a great convo and it came out in the wash.. and I learned something that I didnt realize previously.. so in the end that makes us all winners

Sorry man, but that was NOT a great conversation. That was you spouting drivel. You asked for links, I provided them, and you still didn't even bother to read them. Linux has had OpenGL since, oh years and years ago. It's not something new. You didn't know that and you were talking like you had some kind of knowledge about linux 3d support. You didn't even know the API. That entire exchange was like pulling teeth.
