You can state it about Samsung till the cows come home. Just got the Viewsonic VX800...Gorgeous!!!! No dead pixels, 18" and the color is vibrant. Tried the Samsung 171S earlier...no comparison. The pixel response rate on the Viewsonic is 25ms...playing RTCW or Jedi Knight II...get the same amount of black blur (not much at all) on both screens. Clarity at resolutions other than 1280 x 1024...clear and very readable. I really like the auto sync function...so no matter what resolution you change to...the monitor adjusts itself. I am connected to my Radeon 8500 via digital...very bright...actually have the contrast at about 70% and the brightness at about 80%...very pleasing to the eyes. And as opposed to Tom's review of the Viewsonic, earlier, white is white...not muave. I find this monitor on total par with the Samsung. The speakers, set properly, are not cheezy as someone else stated. Granted...they are not of the quality of Altec Lansing or the like...but they can be made to sound decent in combination with other speakers. Built in Microphone and attractive to look at. Very pleased with Viewsonic!!!

Glad to here you like your VX800, and zero dead pixels is always a plus, man that was probably the scariest thing for me being that I had to buy mine online. The VX800 was actually my first choice.

I'm stationed in Germany at the moment, so there is'nt any place in the immediate area that I can go to see these monitors side by side. So I had to do my soul searching on the internet, and was convinced that the 181T was worth my 800 bucks.

Well with our amature reviews maybe we can influence other common folk like us to look into these awesome monitors.

Professional reviewers (although I'm sure they know there stuff) always seem to put a damper on my overall opinion of the product, I never know from one review to the next because there always contradicting, thats just my opinion...

<font color=red><b>We all love disassembling things to see how it works,
but who wants to put it back together again?

bobmitch,

I was excited about your post. Could you elaborate on the clarity and response times at other resolutions ??

What games did you play at non native res ?? - and could you tell me if you have played any strategy type games on your monitor - Age of Empires, Cossacks, Sudden Strike, Sim City etc??

Thanks - I really appreciate it

RTCW, Jedi Knight, MS Combat Flight Sim II and Myst III at 800 x 600. Clarity was no issue at all. I have a few older DOS based programs that I use, that are 640 x 480 and the text was pretty clear as opposed to Samsung. I was very surprised. Response times were listed at 25ms. I would gander to say that Samsung was slightly better in this area, but not enough that there was a major issue to raise. When playing RTCW, I would get black residue when picking up a rifle. In Jedi Knight II, I would get the same effect when picking up guns or objects. Slight to the visual, but not distracting once the action started. With Samsung...the black residue was minimal. No problems with movement, however. Slight blur on fast action running in both games...but not distorted or anything like that.

bobmitch,

Thanks - should have asked this earlier, What type of system sepcs do you have ?, what kind of video card and do you have DVI digital hookup?

I have the ATI Radeon 8500 64 MB hooked up via Digital. Am starting to see some small issues with ATI and Viewsonic monitor. I can't keep WinXP recognizing the monitor as a VX800-2...it keeps going back to Default Monitor. Also some minor issues with lines in the screen that begin about mid point in the screen...three gray lines that are darker than normal. Seems that Viewsonic says this might be due to the bios on my ATI card. If that's the case...the monitor goes back. If you don't have ATI...problem most likely won't exist.
