Virtual Reality on a GTX 960m Laptop?

Hello!
I recently bought a Dell inspiron 7559 with a GTX 960m graphics card. I'm not a hardcore gamer and mostly just do my programming homework on this laptop. But just out of curiosity, I was just wondering if anyone that have the same laptop or the same graphics card have ever tried to run some virtual reality games on it. I would love to hear your experiences with it. Thanks!

A 960m is already quite low end for gaming and vr is completely out of the question.

Is it? I can run most games above 60 fps at high settings though. And I'm not completely sure how VR works, but most VR games don't seem to have as advanced graphics as other high end titles. But I could only be saying this most likely due to my lack of knowledge of VR. Thank for your response!

What resolution and what kind of games? The 960M is similar to a desktop 750 Ti, you won't be running modern games with high settings at 1080p/60 fps with that GPU. And most VR is going to higher resolution and framerate than that.

Each eye has at least a display with the resolution of 1080p. These need to run at a minimum of 90 fps to not have motion sickness. A lot of the more simple looking vr games can run on lower end hardware however a 960m will still be to slow for it.

I don't know if you're still considering it, but I'm using VR on my 960 M laptop with a Windows Mixed Reality headset flawlessly. VR games out if the Microsoft Store work the best, but you get an - sometimes more than - acceptable experience with SteamVR games too. Since you consider yourself not a hardcore gamer, I don't think the rare but existing framedrops would really be a problem for you.

NOTE: I'm using a 4GB version of the 960m, don't know if it works as good on a 2 GB version. Also this is only my personal experience and may differ from user to user and from machine to machine etc etc.

I'd also like to second this.

Windows Mixed Reality is really your only option for VR with that hardware. You should have no problem watching VR video or playing light games. If you want something to tip your toes into VR, WMR and your hardware can do it. Plus, if you have a more powerful system in the future you'll have the VR headset already and be able to do more.

Disclaimer, I run a WMR headset on more powerful hardware (an RX 470). Even with a card like that, WMR does a good job as I can play games with much higher requirements on the Vive and Rift. I can even play harder to run games like Fallout VR on the RX 470 when the spec sheet "requires" a GTX 1070. So, you might be surprised what you could run.
