Virus Check on Sent Email

I have a strange one - when Norton antivirus (2002) is actively checking
outgoing email it always fails with "Server terminated the connection"
failure (Error # 0x800CCC0F) immediately (ie. it apparantly stops
immediately. If I remove the check of outgoing email Outlook Express sends
it ok.

The problem started for no apparant reason three days ago with no known
changes (it's my wife's computer). I removed and reloaded Norton with no
change.

The system is running WinXP Professional Edition and the email (internet
connection) is wide band cable (Comcast). I have deleted the various mail
box files (received, sent, outbox, etc.) again with no change in the
problem.

Anyone have any suggestions?

TIA
Tom

Why do you want to virus check outgoing mail? When viruses send out mail
from a computer they do not use the email program.

Joan,
Three or four years ago, the outbound virus programs were a conduit through
which outbound mail was routed. In the last couple of years the virus
programs have become smarter and now monitor all traffic on the outbound
SMTP port 25 so that all mail sending is monitored even if it does not come
through your default email program.
That is why!

Tom, are you using Zone Alarm? If so try uninstalling it and then test your
email program. HTH.
