Vista Networking problem, Can ping 127.0.0.1 but cant ping gateway

Cleaning up a heavily infected computer for a friend. The system is clean but I cant get it online. I can ping home but nothing else, not even the router. The computer gets an ip so DHCP is running.

Ive tried:

Flush and register DNS
Uninstall and reinstall wireless card
sfc /scannow - Unable to fix all problems found....
Reset winsock
Checked host

The user had multiple AV installed and I believe the problem is related to one or more not uninstalling properly. Anyone have any suggestions?

And I know Vista...

Sounds like reloading Vista (shudder) may be the best bet. There is no telling how removing multiple AV apps affected the system's registry. Could literally be a needle in a haystack scenario.

Have you disabled the on-board firewall?

Thanks Col yeah firewall disabled, I figured it was a shot in the dark. I just really didnt want to reinstall... Damn you Vista

Vista can certainly be a challenge. Is there a good restore point that might help relieve the pain of a re-install?
