So I know the mb's vrm heatsinks play a big role in overclocking, but, when I hit the oc limit caused by the vrms (since my cooler is really good it must be the vrms that will limit the oc's) will I see signs of the oc not being stable anymore (cpu temps too high/ screen artifacts etc) or is it just like: OK so my mb's vrms are this good, and based on reviews, i should only oc my cpu to x ghz, because if I go higher, I risk damaging the mb's vrms and never knowing

Z3
Z370-p ii probably, but might get a z370-a pro or tomahawk
Just consider it's z370-p ii
And cpu i5 9600k

You will need a Z390 MB.

Something tier B or above, tier A or above for a 5 Ghz OC.

I think 5 GHz isn't as easy as you imagine. Here's a recent article about overclocking a 9600K with cheap Z390 boards, and 5GHz is as far as they can get. And those boards look to have better VRMs than any of the Z370s you listed.

It's easy on the high end MB's with solid high quality VRMS, it's like 2 clicks and done.

Not so much on the others however.

The 9600K is a great OCer, but you still need a good MB.

So where can I update the bios for a small cost?

A local repair shop if there's one nearby. Or you'll have to talk with the manufacturer.

Your choice is either to do it yourself if you have the proper CPU (as you say you do) or spent way more in time and/or money than its worth.

If you're not set up to do it easily yourself, it doesn't make sense to just not get the proper motherboard from the start.

If he doesn't listen and uses that MB it either won't work at all or he will end up burning it up when he tries to OC it.

So it really doesn't matter. 😉

He will end up having to get another MB anyway and maybe another CPU on top of it.

And he has another thread going now too on this. 😉

So it sounds like he will keep going until someone tells him what he wants to hear.
