W7 and gaming

Compared to what ? Unless someone pulls a fast one on ya like MS did w/ halo 3 requiring Vista, it's pretty much a given that any computer program will run faster on an older MS OS than a new one. You won't have the features (even the ones ya don't like) if they are exclusive to the newer one. And of course don't expect and wowie DX10 effects out of an OS w/ DX9...oh wait, there were no wowie DX10 effects :).

Windows 7 64 bit is real good and is almost the same as Vista as far as games go. That said it is not going to make your laptop faster in games. You are really limited by the 2ghz processor speed and the 4570 GFX. Thats not bad but dont expect newer games to run with all the eye candy on at high res.
So a new OS will not help you with gaming but will be able to use all 4 gigs of memory ( I think you have).

I've checked pc releases for 2010 and so far the only games of interest to me are Dragon Age Origins and Modern Warfare 2.

If that laptop can run those games in W7 I would choose the bit rate that offers the greatest gameplay 32bit or 64bit.

I hear upgrading ram is possible, and very expensive so I will not upgrade the ram beyond the initial 4gb.

RECOMMENDED SPECSCPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz Processor or equivalent
RAM: 4 GB (Vista) or 2 GB (XP)
VIDEO: ATI 3850 512 MB or greater
NVIDIA 8800GTS 512 MB or greater
AMD Phenom II X3 Triple-Core 2.8 GHz or greater
DVD ROM (Physical copy)
20 GB HD space

Nope you got a dual core 2.0ghz........not even close to these recommended specs from Dragon Age website. No matter if you use XP, Vista or Windows 7.

Edit: you do actually meet minimum specs.......it might be playable http://dragonage.bioware.com/game/

they are actually in the talks of working on 128-bit architecture now for Windows 8 or 9. 32-bit is starting to be phased out so 64-bit will be the standard, or at least it has much much greater compatibility than it used to.

I've been using 7 x64 RC for a while and have had 1 issue with the architecture for a VPN. Games looks great on it.

64 bit should also be more future proof

Arg I had just thought of checking the requirements and noticed the Quad Core. I'm not sure how to translate laptop GPU's into desktop CPU's but everything else seems in order.

Perhaps I should wait for a new system from Toshiba.

I would think your current configuration should meet the minimum specs. No developer in their right mind would make a game non playable on less than a quad core system. As much as I would like to buy a game like that I don't think you will see it anytime soon.

Wait on upgrading anything on your laptop and get one of the games and try it. I see no reason why it wont play ok, you will likely have to turn down some of the settings.

W7 really would be for a system sporting direct x11 capabilities in which your laptop wont support.

I don't recommend the OS upgrade just to play those two games.

It's not an OS upgrade. I Don't own the laptop yet, but plan on buying it before xmas. I'm not sure if I should just get it now with vista, wait for W7 or just wait for Xmas deals.

That laptop, however, fits my price range and I like the specs.

It also comes with Vista 64 so by the time Toshiba makes a W7 series of laptops I'm pretty sure they will be 64-bit as well. Ill take the advice from you guys and stick with 64-bit.
