I have a corner desk, and my monitor sits diagonally in the corner. I cant place my case behind the monitor and under the desk I hit it with my leg. In the side, where it currently is, I think it takes too much desk space. So I was planning on mounting it to a wooden board on the wall, behind and above the monitor, with the components exposed. Other than dust, what could be the issues of using it as a long term solution?

Solution
I believe that's a not going to do anything good for you. Besides dust, your exposing your components to a situation where they will run hotter. Towers help cooling because of positive pressure where the fan or fans pushes more air into the case and forces the hotter air out of the only opening. Open air setups are really best used for quick component checks. Sustained usage during heavy use might reduce the life of components due to heat.
Outside of dust, other factors would include:
- Moisture in the area; depends on the humidity levels though
- Risk of liquid splashing, if you're having water, soda, beer or some other beverage at your desk
- If there's any form of cooking in and around, oil residue build-up
