Question Want to upgrade my GTX 1080.... is it worth it with a 5600G and 550W PSU?

I have a mini ITX build that I've been using for gaming in the living room. I recently purchased an OLED TV and want to take advantage of HDMI VRR/FreeSync/G-Sync, but apparently can't get that to work over HDMI with a 1080 (or any 10xx card).

Currently, I have:
  • LG C3 OLED TV
  • AMD 5600G
  • EVGA GeForce 1080
  • Asrock B450 AM4 Mini-itx motherboard
  • Cooler Master 550W SFX PSU (technically I can fit an ATX PSU, but the CPU to PSU clearance is small)
  • Silverstone SG13 Case (Max official GPU length 10.5", though I can probably mod the case to fit a slightly bigger one)
I don't really play new games, been playing lots of 5-10 year old games, like Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, Doom Eternal, Wolfenstein, Fallout 3/4/NV, Battlefield 1, etc.

I've been considering spending $300-500 towards upgrading the video card. In fact, I just got a new credit card that has a $200 bonus off $500, so I figure that makes it easy to spend $500. In the price range, my googling tells me the 4070 Super and 7900 GRE are the best in my price range (and I guess the 7800 XT is slightly worse, but worth taking a look at).

However, I'd need to upgrade the PSU to get one of those cards.

Also, I have the 5600G, as when I originally built this system, I figured the APU would be good enough for the light gaming I did at the time - I wasn't planning on getting a dedicated GPU. Now that I'm getting into gaming more, I'm worried that if I get a 4070 Super/7900 GRE (and upgrade the PSU) my 5600 going to immediately become a bottleneck?

I would look into a new case, one that would help you drop in a long and wide GPU. The case you currently have, regardless of the vanilla SG13 or the 2nd revision, doesn't seem to allow for 2+ slot cards to fit. If you go with the RTX4070 Super's most will be 2+ slots but these will fit your case;

As for the PSU, you have a tonne of options for SFX units. I personally use a Lian-Li SP850, has a 12VHPWR connector come stock with the unit;

As for the processor, I'd get the Ryzen 7 5700x instead and not an APU.

Disregard the case in the list, it was to help shortlist parts for the build;

I would still suggest getting a new case, perhaps the Fractal Ridge;

Thanks, my furniture setup limits me to the SG13. I recently upgraded to that from an old Antec ISK300 that wouldn't fit anything beyond a half height video card.

It does look like there are 2 slot 7900 GRE and 4070S cards that would fit my case - my concern is if they will be too bottlenecked by the CPU and perhaps maybe I'm better off spending some of my $300-500 budget on a CPU and a lesser GPU (and maybe skipping the PSU upgrade as some of the lesser GPUs are fine with 550 watts).

Also, buying a case + GPU + CPU + PSU goes well above my current upgrade budget of $300-500.
